My GI started me back on prednisone on 3/6/08 at 60 mg due to a bad flareup. It took a while to kick in. My first good day was 3/24/08, without cramping, less diarrhea and very little blood. Before this I was going 15-20 times a day with lots of pain, blood and mucous. For the past 6 days I go 4-7 times with only sometimes that I see blood. I was also started on 6-MP on 3/17/08, which I know takes a while to start working.  I hate being on prednisone again. At this stage is it too soon to start tapering down the prednisone? I am hoping to stay on prednisone for a short course, but I don't want to set things back by tapering too soon.

Pancolitis - dx December 2006: 6-MP (started 3/17/08); Prednisone 60 mg(started again 3/6/08); Colazal 750 mg - 9/day (generic); Canasa 1000mg 2/day; Women's One-A-Day Multi-Vitamin; Calcium +D 500 mg - 3/day; Coumadin 2.5 mg/day (for DVT, dx 2/13/07); Folic Acid - 400 mcg x2/day

Asacol & mesalamine enemas (bad reaction); Seasonale (birth control) caused DVT; cranberry pill - 300 mg  3x/day (urinary tract infec.) can't take with Coumadin;

Lovenox injec. 2x/day (for DVT)

I think most sources say 6-MP takes at least six weeks to take effect. Given that, I'd wait at least 6 weeks, then taper very slowly.
Moderate to severe left-sided UC (21 cm) diagnosed 2001.
Asacol, Rowasa, Pentasa, Prednisone, Entocort, Azathioprine
Colazal,  Remicade, Nature's Way Primadophilus Reuteri.
In remission since April, 2006. Remicade has been my wonder drug.

My doc told me last week that 6MP takes 3-4 months to start working!

When I was on 6-mp, my consultant said the medication would take 12 weeks to work, I was also on a high dosage of prednisone. He said I would not be able to reduce my steriod intake until after being on the 6mp for 12 weeks. However I did not manage to stay on the 6-mp due to abnornal blood tests. Hope this helps a bit.
