Hi All,

It's been a while since I have posted but I check in every now and then.

I just wanted to provide a little hope to those who are still struggling with this disease.

Yesterday I ran a 5k road race and finished 216th out of 1,500 runners and 14th out of 44 in my division (25:50 was the time). To some this might not be anything impressive but it was only a little more than a year ago I could barley make it up the stairs because I was so weak from my colitis. My hemoglobin was around 75, I had lost 30 pounds, wasn't sleeping because of the pred and was seriously considering surgery.

Now I feel better than before I had colitis. Part of the "comeback" is probably due to Imuran but I also think it is a positive attitude, healthy lifestyle and support from family and friends.

So it can get better. I know I am not the only one with a story like this. There are many, many others. So if you are struggling, hang in there. There is hope.
Kevin

It's all good (for now)

Thank you for taking the time to share your success - it really gives me hope!! I think b/c of the nature of the board, it's mostly folks that are in a flare, which means a lot of sad stories, so it's great to hear from the other side of things. Hopefully I'll be here soon doing the same thing!

Great post and congrats on the race.  I also am starting to get into the best shape of my life a little over a year after I was first diagnosed and had a bad flare.  Being so sick for a good 5 months was and is a huge motivator for me.  Though I'm still on a little prednisone, hopefully I'll be off that in a few weeks.  I've always been pretty active, and when I couldn't be due to illness it was very depressing.  While I wouldn't say I'm better than ever, I'm getting there!
Dx Left-sided UC Dec. 2006
Currently:
Azathioprine 200mg/day
Prednisone 5/2.5 (trying to taper-started at 60 6/1)
Lialda 2/day
Multivitamin, B complex vit., fish oil, calcium, fiber supplement, probiotic, adrenal support

Bravo!!!!!!!! Thanks, too, for sharing your story. You are absolutely right about the importance of staying positive. I suffered recurrent UC flares for yrs 'til Colazal came on the market & helped me to stay in remission where other 5-ASAs had always failed me for one reason or another. Best wishes to you for continued success. / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC; currently on 3 Colazal daily for maintenance of remission)
