with me and flaring.  I've had external hemmies for a few weeks now..."kind of" dealing with them but not much.  Anyway...a blue  puffy butt(hole), from pushing bms (and I know better), has resulted in what I determine as a mild flare resulting in that butt throbbing feeling, bit of white-knuckling through some bms, urgency and increased frequency of 2 - 3 bms a day.  The determiner is the butt feeling....   I had a day of noticable mucus bm last week...hmmm.

I've increased the rectal meds to nightly....and using proctocedyl on my butt externally.  Definitely soothing.

My next question is regarding fibre supplementation.
Who is using Benefibre?  which one?  accolades?

Who is using Prodiem (pb4?)...which one? accolades?

I don't use any and think it would defiitely help.    When should I add it since I do take meds/supplements/probiotics.  I would like to lean more towards capsules rather than mixing....any suggestions.

I use Prodiem stool bulker tabs not the laxative ones which are little round brown pills.

Quincy-- did you eat any spicy Thai lately? I ask because a middle-aged colleague of mine mentioned that it always sends her hemmies into a fit! If you can get hold of the lidocaine cream that gastros use for digital exam, that would likely heal you fast. Dunno if you can get it in Canada, but Another UC Wife lists it with her hubby's meds-- so it must be available by prescription here in U.S. Meanwhile, hang tough, eh? / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC ... I have used Benefiber in the past. Easy to take caplets. More recently I've been using Fibercon. Once again, easy to take caplets.

Bum pain is miserable! I hope the extra TLC is helping :)

Yup, they have lidocain gel here in Canada, it's been a life-saver in the past for me with my perianal skin tags...

and true about spicy foods, they can actually bring on hemmies and/or irritate them further...I've heard this long ago.

Hi...I have spicy food sporatically...doesn't seem connected to a more noticably hemmie butt. I can say I do push more when bms are more caulky....(forget the other description we use)..which would be not enough fibre of the right kind me hopes.

I have been taking the Zymactive enzyme and other digestive enzymes which I guess might be breaking down things too much (have cut back on the Zymactive) ...and I think that's not creating a more formed bm...hence the pushing. I think I have found a possible culprit.

Excessive gas, however, if I already have an external hemmie starting will definitely cause it to worsen...the pushing I guess as well.

I'll look into the Prodiem or the Benefibre capsules you all suggested. The metamucil just causes too much discomfort....even though it's great for diarrhea in a flare (which I haven't had in forever), I can't do more than just for that.

Thanks for the suggestions....I'd really much rather diarrhea (although just once or twice a day compared to 20..lol) than caulky poos (what's the other word we use..sheesh I can't remember!).

I must admit that the 5ASA enemas (squeezed right to the anus opening) helps immensely...they should make a 5ASA for hemorrhoids too..a little dab might do me...haha!

You talking about the soft serve variety? :) When you have your hemmies flaring up, does it make it harder to get the enema in? Does it hurt? Just wondering since I just noticed that I have an internal hemmie that is now starting to give me grief - you know the itch and burning pain sort of thing. I have never flared with a hemmie before so just keeping an open mind for future reference! lol

Ah well, flares can still get the best of us and I hope that this little blip goes away fast for you!

LOL...yes, the soft-serve..hahahaaaaaaaaa! I don't have an internal hemmie...but with the external one, I can feel the nozzle more than normal. Lubrication helps a lot!
Could you maybe have a fissure? They would itch as well s hurt.

Yes, it's a blipping blip..but definitely there...wierd, however...it always gives me the reminescent feeling of having my period the first few days....interesting....maybe I always had something going on in there during periods. Hysterectomy only goes so far..lol!

The Bentylol has definitely helped the butt throbbing..I really don't have much pain, however...which is good.

I'll be on the enemas for at leas 2 weeks and taper from there...again. Oh well...I always find Spring so stressful...but I have a really easly next week and will book time to get stuff done that needs to be done. Doesn't help being a procrastinator and busy..excuses only go so far.

Hope you have a feeling better week.

Just remember Q, that initially any stool bulker can cause discomfort (excess gas, bloating) which is completely normal and your body will adjust but you have to take it consistantly...for me it was 3 months before those symptoms passed, but it has been well worth it for sure.

Good luck!

Q, do you ever call your GI when you start flaring or do you just self medicate? Do you only call when things get severe (if ever)?

I'm pretty sure mine is just an internal hemmie because sometimes - TMI coming - when I pass gas I feel like a worm is wiggling back up! Odd feeling for sure! So I took a mirror and didn't see anything external and did a little push and yep, there it was. If it's still bothering me in May, I will bring it up to my GI.

Don't feel bad about things going on in spring - I think that is the same for everyone! Maybe that's why we see such a prevalance (sp?) of flares in spring eh?

Hi pb4...haven't even had a chance to check out the fibre supplements yet..will do so on Friday.

I'll definitely start slowly and expect some discomfort..

When do you take them...fitting into the med/supplement/probiotic schedule. I basically only take my stuff twice a day....any suggestions?

I'll keep you posted on the process/progress.

Thanks for the responses.

Sherry...The rectal med increase/taper is left up to me...and I treat at the earliest confirmed symptoms. I see him every 3 - 6 months anyway...and I always bring a huge list of questions.

If I was feeling out of the ordinary or having different /more severe symptoms that caused me concern, I'd call to make an appointment.
I did that a lot the first few years....after that I only saw him about every 6 - 12 months.

It's not the norm for me to call unless something is wonky with prescriptions. Even prescriptions, I leave it up to the pharmacy to call for repeats since he still has no problem with that.

LOL....the tingly wormy feeling....I get that sometimes with external hemmies..(I seem to have 2, one at the front one at the back..of the anus). The back one gives me more symptoms... The front one also has the fissure and a small tag from it...still normal for fissures apparently.

Regarding your hemmie....you should treat it anyway...even anusol supps. If you can get proctocedyl supps or even the ointment ti be put inside or outside...better yet (but on prescription). That stuff works really well.

Things have improved regarding rectal pain upon bms and butt throbbing (still love the Bentylol!). Still some urgency and soft serve is more formed. Still at 2 - 3 bms.

I'll stay on the enemas for another week after this and taper then.

Thanks for the replies...muchly appreciated!

I actually take my fibre supplement right before bed (with plenty of water, you don't want it to be in your esophagus when it starts to expand), along with another dose of omegas 3-6-9 and bee propolis...this works well for me because like you, I take some stuff 2-3 times a day...I'm literally a walking supplement store LOL!

I do best with 2x daily...sigh.

One thing I noticed about the difference between the Metimucil and other fiber sups is that the Metimucil specifically says not to take it with other meds - it will block absorption. I haven't found a warning like that with the Fibercon or Benefiber... Must be the different formulations?

Interested to know which fiber your research points you to.

Hi..I'm feeling tons better ...noticable yesterday overall.

I looked at some products...so many have artificial sweeteners. I want to try the inulin product..I think that's Benefibre. All the ingredients don't seem to be listed...and when it says sugar-free..it means it's got artificial sweetener.

Still looking...but I do feel very good at this point. I can't say how i'm still amazed as to how fast rectal meds work for me.

Thanks for the input everyone!

New Prodiem Bulk Fibre Therapy Caplets contain calcium polycarbophil, an inert fibre that does not undergo intestinal fermentation and has marked water-holding capacity, more than 3 times that of psyllium.

This is why I like the prodiem and no sugar or artificial sweetners, ect in the cap form.

And, Indications And Clinical Uses: The relief of simple, chronic, atonic, and spastic constipation and for constipation associated with pregnancy, convalescence and advanced age. For use in special diets lacking in residue fiber, mucous and ulcerative colitis and in the management of constipation associated with irritable bowel syndrome, diverticulitis, hemorrhoids and anal fissures.

OK...will try them. I didn't see them at my pharmacy. See, that's one thing that ticks me off.....one has to run around to every freaking place just to get something.

I'll get them for sure. Thanks muchly pb4. Will get them tomorrow.

I think that polycarbo... yada yada is what is in Fibercon as well. It's something that the body does not digest, but links up with the water...
