I'm 26 years old, have been diagnosed with UC since 2004. In 2004, I was in college and I started bleeding profusely out of my rectum. I went to the ER and they gave me meds for bacterial infection. I then was reffered to a gastro. who did a colonoscopy and said that I have full blown UC throughout my colon and put me on Asacol. Well I took the horrible stuff everyday and that made me further sick. When I went back to the ER and my gastro. and I talked we thought that I was rejecting the asacol and they put me on a regime of medication such as 6mp and prednisone to stop the swelling and bleeding. 2 weeks later I get out of there but don't fully recover for another month.

about a year ago, I fell really ill due to the 6mp shutting down my immune system and caught CMV mono-very rare and is usually caught through a normal immune system. Since mine was degraded, it was easy for it to wreck me. Ever since then, I have not been on any meds, not even asprine. I was at home recovering for 2-3 months on the couch and bed.

Today, my wife and I are trying to conceive a baby. We have been for the past year and a half. We have had many misfortunes due to her PCOS. So we started fertility treatments. I started to flare up and its bad. I have been on 40 mg daily of prednisone and I feel like crap. I eat slices of bread and some potatoes (de-skinned and microwaved) here and there. I drink lots of water. It's been a week and a half and I'm sick of it. I'm on the toilet when the prednisone is wearing out in the early morning and it feels like its on fire. After a while I feel fine, then all of a sudden I fell nautious and vomit while on the crapper.

This is the hell I'm going through. My wife and I talk constantly and we are both afraid that the prednisone will affect my fertility and I myself feel like I am not getting better. I don't know if there is an underlying problem. I worry and it consumes me because if I don't know I could end up back in the hospital and my wife would stress out and lose another baby.

Is there anyone I can talk to for advice?

Poor you, have you tried any natural supplements such as probiotics, omega 3 oils, etc?  I have very mild flares compared to others on this forum so I haven't yet treated with meds.  I do find that I can't eat potatoes when I am flaring, so I substitute with salad for my meals.  I also find that eating fresh, crushed garlic really eases my flares.

As for fertility and pred, I am way past the baby stage, lol but there are others that have had children and are planning families so they will be able to help you more.

Dx:  UC Proctitis 2006

Meds:  None so far. Garlic works to ease flares. My GI laughed when I told him and said it was just coincidence.

Diet:  Regular fresh garlic, Biobest yogurt daily, Omega 3 supplements, very limited junk food, carbs and processed food, low fat diet.  Lots of fresh fruit and veggies (limited potatoes).

Added: tumeric and probiotics.

Sorry your UC is so fierce! I can somewhat relate. My wife and I tried for almost 2 years to conceive. I had to have brain surgery - I had a tumor on my pituitary gland which had my testosterone so low, and prolactin so high I could have probably worn a skirt and heels! After the surgery I had a major flare and am still in it. My body started making the correct levels of testosterone....i could actually feel it, and see it - my facial hair started growing fuller (i am 33 and had patchy facial hair - people think im 16).

Anyway - in the mean time I had to start taking Pred. We were also concerned because of the sperm count issue... I didnt really have a choice - my UC was flared too bad, so on the pred I went. I was on it for a few months. It helped within 2 days. I slowly tapered off, but am having symptoms again. However - my wife is pregnant as of 2 months ago.

I am just giving my story - I dont think Pred effected my count to negatively.

Maybe consider talking to a fertility doc about your situation....you may have to submit a sperm sample to get a count....start there. But dont deny yourself meds to get healthy! UC is horrible and yours sounds like it is pretty serious....
33 yr old male. UC for 14 years. 5mg pred (tapering off), 12 pills Asacol per day, Dicyclomine (for cramps), 0.5 - 1mg Atavan per day (anxiety), Fish oil pills, Culturelle probiotics. Recent Endonasal brain surgery to remove non-cancerous hormone producing tumor on pituitary gland (And I am still more afraid of my UC!!)
