Well the health food place where I purchase my probiotics talked me into trying a different probiotic, Primal Defense by Garden of Life.  I am kinda scared because it is so different.

Has any tried it and if so, what results did you get from it?

Dx:  UC Proctitis 2006

Meds:  None so far. Garlic works to ease flares. My GI laughed when I told him and said it was just coincidence.

Diet:  Regular fresh garlic, Biobest yogurt daily, Omega 3 supplements, very limited junk food, carbs and processed food, low fat diet.  Lots of fresh fruit and veggies (limited potatoes).

Added: tumeric and probiotics.

I know that some people like it, but I had a bad experience with it. When I first started taking it I felt tremendously better for a short period of time and continued taking it for over a year. A few weeks after I started taking it I started having mild flare symptoms, but I thought the Primal Defense was helping so I kept taking it. It wasn't until I missed my dose one day that I realized the Primal Defense was actually causing the mild flare symptoms! I went off it and my flare symptoms went away almost immediately. A few weeks later I tried taking it for a day again just to make sure, and sure enough I flared mildly that day. I'm not saying it will necessarily affect you this way, but just be on the alert while you're taking it.

Thanks laurar, I read on the internet, that that seems to happen to people, but this person did not have UC, so I wanted to hear from the members here.

Did nothing for me, plus Jordan Rubin's name shows up on quack watch a time or two for making false claims. Pro-Bio by Enzymedica is the best probiotic I've used so far.

Did nothing for me except empty my wallet...sounds good having all those different strains, but it didn't help me in anyway at all. What does help is "Culterelle" and I think it's less expensive.

I also felt better initially, but rapidly got worse and symptoms resolved when I quit taking it. I've read there's concern about soil based organisms because we don't really know how they might affect the body long-term and they are not considered safe for human use by some authorities on probiotics.
Diagnosed with ulcerative colitis spring 1999.

Maintenance dose sulfasalazine.
Probiotics, l-glutamine and fish oil caps. George's aloe vera juice. Oregano oil antibiotic, antiviral, antifungal.

Yes, like Princesea said, the soil-based probiotics tend to cause issues for some people. I use Enzymatic Therapy acidophilus pearls. I've also used Ultimate Flora brand in the past and liked it. Culturelle gave me horrible gas (probably because it contains whey). I've heard it's good to rotate your probiotics every few weeks.

wow from all of the non-believers I wonder if i'm just biased since i have seen results :)  I've been taking it now for well over a year or more with no problems and believe it has helped keep me in remission. I take it usually with breakfast and before dinner. Maybe it took time to adjust to, i'm not sure as I was up and down while I was starting out.  It has helped though, at least for me!

Hi Love4cats, I have no input regarding your question but  I was curious as to how you take the garlic if I take raw garlic it gives me a very sever stomach ache. Do you take your vegetables raw or cooked. I have also noticed that eating less of processed foods helps. Wish to stay in remission with diet alone.

Taking Probiotic  VSLN #3 amount 4 daily
Asacol during flare ups 6 daily during flare ups and then reduce it to 4.
Have had UC for the past 5 years.
Diagnosed as Moderate Pan Colitis.
Have psorisis along with UC and back pain.

I crush and add to my salad dressing.  Due to the sulphur in garlic some people have digestive problems with it.  I am able to eat garlic to the point my tongue is burning and have no issues.  I am also fortunate enough to be able to digest raw fruits and veggies, even during a flare and thank goodness because I can't eat anything heavy.

Thanks to everybody and their responses.  I am kinda scared to continue on with these.  Maybe I'll alternate my old brand with this new one and see how it goes.

Thanks princesa, I did read that and another articleNan Karhryn Fuchs and she doesn't recommend them either, not enough clinical studies to ensure they are safe.

what type of soil organisms are in primal defense?, I am just starting to understand
more about probiotics, but it sounds like this product is not for beginners.
