I was just started on Nystatin oral solution swish and swallow. It doesn't really seem to be helping and now the discomfort is traveling down my neck? Has anyone had a similar experience? I was told I may need Diflucan or a scope.

I'm newly diagnosed with severe pan coli*** on Prednisone and Remicade. Never had a chance to try all of the other medications discussed on this forum.

Is thrush common for UCers? Is is common with Prednisone or Remicade??

Thank you.

All my life I've had problems with my throat and swallowing. Nothing major that ever needed medical attention. When I got bad with my first flare I figured a lot if had to do with my throat or my thryoid. I had a c-scope and also an endoscope. I was convinced the doc would find something in the endoscope but he never even mentioned this.

I still believe I have throat issues. I'm not sure if they are fungal related. A lot of it could be due to years of poor digestion and bad food choices. But my throat is not 100% healthy.

I would add a question to this thread. Has anyone had issues with esophegitis - inflammation of the throat. From what I gather this is different from inflammation in the throat that Chron's could potentailly cause.
Asacol and Iron as Needed. <I've fallen back into unhealthy ways and really enjoying it, burb!>

I had thrush in my mouth when on Prednisone--not fun! I also got cracks in the corners of my mouth/lips. I used Nystatin and did Diflucan once as well. They both helped. Let your doctor know if the Nystatin is not helping.

Oral thrush while on Pred is not uncommon. Keep in touch with your doctor, as it can spread through the digestive system in some cases.

Sorry you're having this nasty side effect, Charmin.

You know, I have been in the hospital with 2 really bad flares over the past 2 years - and both times I had really bad thrush in my mouth/throat.  I told my doc last time I was in the hospital that every time I get soooooo sick - I always have this thrush.  He gave me diflucan and mycelex and it went away.  BTW - I was not on pred yet when this happened.

Diagnosed Pancolitis 5/05.

Soccermom, any immunosuppressant - including Pred, 6-MP, Imuran - increases the likelihood of fungal infections. Others tend to get them when they're sick. Oral thrush is essentially the same thing as vaginal yeast infection, just in a different location. So anything - sickness or meds - that lowers our resistance to infection can lead to them.

You might also try swishing a little wild oregano oil and warm water around in your mouth. Wild oregano oil is antifungal (also antibacterial and antiviral). You can get a small bottle with dropper OTC from a healthfood store.
Diagnosed with ulcerative colitis spring 1999.

Maintenance dose sulfasalazine.
Probiotics, l-glutamine and fish oil caps. George's aloe vera juice. Oregano oil antibiotic, antiviral, antifungal.

There are also some natural antifungals you can try (they've all worked at me when I've had yeast issues from Prednisone in the past): caprylic acid, grape seed extract, garlic, pau d' arco tea.
Diagnosed Ulcerative Pancolitis

Probiotics
Fish Oil
Vitamin C
Slippery Elm
TURMERIC!!!

I'm currently suffering from thrush because of systematic candida! Right now, Im only on the nystatin swish and swallow! In the past Ive used diflucan and I felt better while on it, but got worse after. Since then about 2 years ago, Ive never been the same! So just recently I started the nystatin again with pysillium to flush it out of my system. However, I have bad yeast issues and nothing has worked. I have it externally too on my face! The docs dont know what will work for me! Im in the process of getting a 3 day stool analysis with parasitology from Genova LAbs to see exactly whats going on and what remedy will work! YEast will become and can become very resistent to medications! It's been tough!

HOnestly, I think my Ulcerative Proctitis is a result of the reocurring yeast problem! THe docs just dont understand much about it to properly treat it! It's becoming more of a prevalent problem in society though! Goodluck to you and myself!!!!

Every single time I was on pred I would get thrush- and on the Nystatin Swish & Swallow I'd go. It takes a long time to get rid of it- I had to use Nystatin religiously at least 4x day, for a good month or so. Every time I figured I was ok & stopped it, the thrush would come back in a day or so. Even if used the Nystatin only twice a day, the thrush would really rear it's nasty head. Give it a good week or so, using it at least 4x day to see if it's helping. My throat would get raw & sore too- the thrush goes down into it, that's why you swallow the Nystatin, to coat your throat. I can basically count on oral thrush if I'm on pred. It's an extremely common side effect of pred.

diagnosed with UC '02
meds-
Asacol- 8 tabs/day
Remicade infusions
Imuran- 100mgs/day
Culturelle

Freakzilla,
Did you also go on an antifungal diet concurrently with the antifungals (Nystatin) you are taking for the yeast problem?
