Hi everyone,

I'm having my first colonoscopy on Monday and was wondering if anyone could offer some advice on how to make the process go smoother.

I'm in the UK at the moment (as this is where I go to school) and though things were under control before I took the flight here from the USA, I have been having a slight flare-up since I got here.  So, I'm concerned about any discomfort whilst doing the colonoscopy due to the inflammation.  I thought I'd be completely knocked out for the procedure but apparently they only give a mild dose of valium here.

I've been given senna granules and citramag to take with warm water the day before, and am going to be on clear fluids the day before too.  I've also been advised to use some barrier cream to avoid soreness.  I read someone's recommendation of drinking the senna and citramag through a wide straw to avoid tasting much.  Does anyone have any other tips?

Since I've never had a colonoscopy, I'm not sure if I'm making this out to be a lot worse than it actually is, but my last sigmoidoscopy was quite uncomfortable so I'm a bit apprehensive at the moment.

Thanks.

Completed first (6 week) tapered course of Pred in 10/07, flaring up since coming off it.
11/07: Switched from Asacol to 12 x 750mg Colazal (3 weeks on it and symptoms got worse)
12/07: Asacol 4800 mg, Started Azathioprine 175mg, Prednisone taper from 60mg - Now on 10mg; 2/08: added 2 Pentasa x 1mg on alternate days.

I've only had one colonoscopy and it was here in the UK. It went really smoothly and the worst part was the prep, in fact even the prep was ok, I just hated not being able to eat all day.

Oh and I was very inflamed when I had mine, very little pain really, obviously there is a little bit when it first goes in but other than that it was fine. Just make sure your relaxed, don't tense up too much.
DX with UC Jan 07
Currently taking Colazide (allergic to Asacol and Pentasa) 6 a day
Also taking VSL3 X1 a day

The prep is the worst I think. Drinking the stuff makes me nauseaus. I would drink it very slowly over ice w/a straw. I think I speeded mine up a little too quickly toward the end and that made me sick. Also, dont drink something you normally drink, b/c I don't want to drink those flavors of gatorade or vitamin water ever again.....it reminds me of it now.

Hi Rio,if you get treated like I did a month or so ago, you'll be fine!I had two C-Scopes previously, neither too comfy. However, this time around,I got Pethidine(a synthetized opiate),along with Midazolam(stronger Benzo than Valium)and it was a minor inconvenience at worst!

I am UK born and bred and am finding the "investigative" part of our disease,to be much easier to go through now. Please don't get worked up about it,I think you're going to find it a breeze.
Procto-Sigmoiditis dx 1995.First Colonoscopy in ten years,on 29th Feb 2008,revealed moderate to severe Pancolitis.

Thanks alot for the replies.

Yes, I'll definitely try to be relaxed about it.  I've stocked up on the wet wipes and some zinc & castor oil cream too and will get some additional clear fluids to stay hydrated.
