It looks as if since the Remicade has lost its effectiveness, the next route is Humira.  Does anyone know if we have to wait until the Remicade is out of his system (he just had an infusion on Tuesday) before we can start humira?  Thanks!  And has anyone heard of a drug called Tysabri?

I had a reaction to Remicade and my GI scheduled my Humira to start 6 weeks after the Remicade but then my insurance wouldn't approve it and I am taking it for "Psoriatic Arthritis." I just got the infusion yesterday and I have some welts but that's all so far and no diarrhea yet. I have heard a little about Tysabri but heard a few people died from it from what I have read, I think I have heard of it on the Crohn's board.

My GI's group is participating in clinical testing of Tysabri. The GI nurses at the infusion center said it's being seen now as a last resort drug for Crohn's. It has been associated with leukodystrophy, a degenerative and fatal brain disease. They said they don't think it's being considered for UC because we do have the option of surgery, so the risk isn't felt to be justified for UC patients.

I think you do have to wait a bit before starting Humira. What does his GI say? Did the doctor suggest the Humira? It seems a little soon to assume that the Remicade has lost effectiveness, but then again, if he's on the highest dose with no improvement, I guess you'd have to assume that. I'm trying to remember what it was like for me...I think the remicade is helping a little, but who knows. I'm currently 5 weeks out from my last high-dose infusion, which is when things start to go bad usually. We'll see. I hope your son finds some relief with Humira- I know you've been crazy with worry. Unfortunately though, when you do some research, it appears that for the people who have lost responsiveness to  Remicade, the same thing occurs with Humira pretty quick. Some people on here have just started on Humira after Remciade, so I look forward to hearing their results.
