I have a question. My nephew also has UC, and is currently in a flare. He has pancolitis and is only on asacol. He has been treated with pred in the past, and this time his doctor wants to steer clear of the steriods. The doctor raised his doseage of asacol  from 12 a day to 16 a day.  He has been on this doseage for a month, and it is working. He is going into remission.
What concerns me is the high doseage. I read in these posts, that 12 is the max. I tried to do a search on the net, but could not find it written anywhere that 12 is the max. Could someone please show me where it says this. I am concerned for my nephew.  Thanks in advance

My GI told me 12 was the max. dosage. He said more probably wouldn't hurt you, but it wouldn't help anymore than 12. Maybe that's not right for everyone if it's helping your nephew.

This Web site also says 4.8 grams of Asacol is the maximum dosage, but this is from an insurance company, so I'm not sure it's right or if it's just the max. dose they'll cover:

My GI will take the dose up to 16 a day during a flare before going to Prednisone. He will also increase the Rowasa to twice per day at the same time.

A good friend with UC is instructed to do the same by her GI.

When I was taking Asacol, there were times at the start of a flare that I would increase from 12 to 18 for a week to 10 days, and it would nip my flares. I never had any problems when I took more than 12/day.

when i was firdt diagnoesd and majorly flaring, the doc had me begin Asacol and slowly increase my dosage to 16 a day. once it looked safe to, at the start of remission, he had me decrease down to 12 a day and after a few months,8 a day, which im on now.

Mild tangent. Are we talking the 400mg tablets here? (I don't know if they come in any other dosage) I've, personally, never tried more than 9/day of those to try to control a flare; and that's pretty hit & miss. But, if people's GIs are talking 12/day to nip a flare I might have to discuss that option with my GI...

Quincy, Yes I mentioned the rectals, which he has been on in the past. But his doctor wanted to try something different, and it seems to be working. I was just curious about the high doseage
