Hubby has been dealing with very stiff aching in his hips, shoulders and hands (when he makes a fist) for about 2 months now.  He only started complaining to me this past week or two as I notice he is not walking right and it is now throwing his back off.  It is at the point it is starting to be debilitating and something needs to give.

We know that the long term prednisone use and being off it since early Dec that it will take awhile for things to get back to some kind of normalcy and expect some things going on with the body but.......

After reading all the fine print and evaluating the Fosamax side effects we are going to stop the once a week fosamax to see if things improve.  I dropped a note off to his primary care today regarding this so it will be interesting to see if he calls with other suggestions.

The Imuran in some cases can also cause this............however of the 2 medications if one has to stop for now it makes sense to try the fosamax.  He started the Imuran in May and the Fosamax in August and stopped the prednisone in Dec.

We see the Mayo Dr in mid May and will also discuss with him.  Hopefully he will feel much better in 4/5 weeks before that visit.  If not then maybe the Imuran dose needs to be lowered???

Any suggestions out there from anyone on the same meds as he is on and if this has happened to any of you and how it was dealt with.  Just curious and thank you.

It could be the meds. Unfortunately, it could also just be UC arthritis. I started having joint pains, first in my shoulders, then knees, and then other joints, a good ten years before I was diagnosed with UC. The docs wanted to call it RA, but none of the labs were right and it was in the wrong joints. I know now it was likely my first symptom of UC.

I hope your husband feels better soon, whatever is causing the problem.

My mother in law has the beginning of osteo and had to take a *agh - brain dead here!* the med to strengthen your bones. She was having a lot of hip pain that wasn't there before and she complained to the doc. Her doc said that it wasn't the bone med. But the pain got so bad that my MIL decided to stop the med to see if it was that. And it was. As soon as she stopped it, her hip pains receded.

It took my body about a year to get rid of the aches caused by prednisone. My guess is that pred is the culprit. What helped, contrary to logic, was lots of exercise. I refused to take any OTCs and just worked my way through it.

thanks for the replies.............he is going to try stopping the fosamax just to see if the pain does lessen or go away. If not then maybe it is the prednisone working it's way out and rearing its ugly head since the body is not getting it any more and it was craving it making him steroid dependant.

Hopefully NOT UC arthritis for the poor guy!

UC wife, I can really sympathize with your husband. I had UC for years and years. Doctors told me through the years that UC arthritis was a side effect of the disease. However, massive doses of prednisone had the arthritis masked! Now that I have had a colectomy and no longer take prednisone, I have been having aches all over. I've been walking a lot. Like Suebear said the exercise is much better than taking any more medicine.

He would be very much in favor of theraputic massages! I'll be sure to mention it to him. The chiropractor would not be something he would want to jump into at all - it would be more a last resort type thing for him.

We'll see how the fosamax discontinuance goes - he can always go back on it if that is not what is doing it to him.

He played golf today but could not tee off with the way the back and hip are. He basically chipped and putted and drove the golf cart but at least got some walking/exercise in.

We go to Vegas this Sunday for 6 days - hope he can get some enjoyment out of this and not be uncomfortable. I'm sure the change of pace will take his mind off it too.
