Gma had a major D accident today (lordy what a mess!).  She got it on the carpet of her bedroom and all over the bathroom because she just couldn't hold it.  But when I went to shampoo her carpet, I noticed there was blood mixed in with the D.  She has never had that problem in the past and honestly I don't know if she has ever had blood in her stool before.  She also has diverticulitis (or diverticolsis - the one where there is pockets in her intestine but no infections - I can never remember which one is which).  So should I take her to her primary doc or skip the primary all together and take her to a GI - what would you do?

Sherry - I am so sorry your Grandma is sick, and you had to clean all that stuff up.  It's so difficult watching somone go through that.

I would probably phone primary and make appt w/GI. That way the primary is kept informed. My Doc's are really good about cc'ing eachother and both ask me how I am doing w/my other problem, my GI always asks how things are going w/my kidneys and my Kidney Doc always asks how my colon is and they always cc my primary (don't know what she actually does or if she even reads it, but the info goes into my file). I am really begining to like my GI, I feel he is really keeping on top of everything and he is good about ret. phone calls and making appts.

I would also suggest as Beth has. A call to her PCP and a referral to the GI.

How terrfying for your both. Many hugs.

-itis is the inflammation. So - osis is the pockets.

Hi Sherry...sad to hear of your grandma's new situation. The best thing would be to get her checked out asap. If you can take her to your GI without going to her PCP, that would be even better.

Keep us posted as to how she's doing.

Gma seems to be better today but unfortunately I think her carpet is trashed. Her room stinks to high heavens and I cleaned her carpet and left her windows open all day yesterday! She has admitted to having sporadic bouts of D and I know she also throws up easily. So I think I will call my GI and make an appt for her just to be on the safe side.

Sounds like the best plan. Does your gma at least wear incontinence diapers? That will help at least. It sounds as though she should be admitted for a thorough diagnosis.

You must be in incredible stress regarding her situation.

Please keep us posted.

Oh yes, most definately the incontinence diapers not for the D but for her bladder issues. But, it didn't help yesterday :( And no, no stress really........it's all par for the course with gma. I just roll with the punches now! :)

Ah Sherry! You are such a good granddaughter!

Have you tried Spot Shot? I swear that is the best stuff ever. My little doggy has a weak stomach and it works like a charm on the carpet. Keep us posted!

Hmmm I would have to buy like 10 cans (bottles?) of that stuff! LOL I'm talking like a 6ft by 1 1/2ft trail from wall to the door. Yes, I'm talking MAJOR blowout. She felt soooo bad though. I come upstairs from my shower and she comes out of her room and says "Sherry, you're gonna kill me!" Just the look on her face.....it was a look of shame - the poor lady. She kept apologizing and I had to keep reassuring her that it's ok, accidents happen. I used my steam cleaner (Bissel) but I think I might have to swipe it again.

You could always have it professionally cleaned if you need to. Is the doctor going to see her?
