Can Imuran put one into remission? I am currently on 40mg pred. and Colazyl and flaring since November. I heard 2 different answers to the Imuran ? from my GI's. One said only prednisone, smoking or remicade would get me into remission and imuran can only help to maintain remission.

Imuran definitely gets some people into remission. Because it takes a while to take effect, Prednisone is typically given for the first couple of months. For other people it doesn't help. May I ask why you have multiple GI's?

My primary GI us at the U of C. Due to some scheduling pbs, another reputable GI saw me. He said that Imuran would/could put me in remission while the U of C said not.

I am totally confused.

I'm steroid dependent, so I had to take both prednisone and immuran/azithioprine at the same time. It takes time for the immuran to take effect. If I don't take the immuran, I will flare again. As long as I take the immuran, I am in pretty good remission.

hi azathioprine certainly helped me go into remission, i have had uc since 1984 and was trying to cope with it with salazopirine and at some points over the years steriod enemas, pred foam, and at times steriods which i hated taking, about 5 years ago i told my doc that i couldn`t cope with it any longer please could i have an operation to remove my bowel and she asked if i had ever tried azathioprine which i hadn`t i gave it a go and it took a few weeks to make any difference and it totally changed my life, i went abroad on holiday for the first time 4 years ago (i am 44 years old)  i would never of dreamed of that before, i can work more hours now, before my life was controlled by my uc like will there be a loo nearby etc. I know it might not work for everyone but i am glad i gave it ago. :-)

i am currently taking azathioprine 100mg daily

salazopirine 2 tablets twice a day
