hi there! So I'm taking an informal poll- how many times do you all go to the bathroom per day? As usual, I'm having 2nd thoughts about surgery & wondering if my "normal" is really that bad. So I started keeping track a few days ago, & figure i go about 8-10 times a day, including at least 2-3 times a night. Which isn't that bad, truly. For me, anyhow... But then I think "8-10 times a DAY!?!?!?" That's crazy... but is it? Help me out- how many times are you in the loo/bathroom/on the throne, etc???

In remission I go about 1-3 times in the morning but when I am flaring I can go up to 10 a day - worse flare ever, I was going about 25+ times a day.

In remission, 1-2 is pretty normal with 3 on occasion. This flare has had about 5-10. It's not the frequency that has been SO bad - it's the PAIN that accompanies them that's tearing me up.

I am getting over a flare. The most that I've gone this flair has been 7. I think that is a lot, but after reading this board, it doesn't sound like it is. I have been up to as high as 10, but that was only for days at a time, not weeks. When I am in remission, it is usually 1-2. I can't imagine having to go to the bathroom 35 times a day. I hope you get better!

in flare ups i've been 20+

thing is.. when you go to the bathroom.. have a bm.. stand up and then sit right back down to do it again.. does that count as two or just one???

eva lou -
consider how much sleep you are losing if you have to get up to poo 2-3 times a night on a regular basis.

so even tho 8-10 times is not as bad as going 35 times (holy cow!!!!), it is still not a fun way to get thru the day. especially if you are currently on all the meds in your signature... what else can you do to improve? is surgery your last option?

it's just a really personal thing and boils down to if you're happy with the way things are or if you have more quality of life potential with the surgery choice.

when i was coming out of my bad flare, my GI wanted to know if i was waking at night to have any BMs and i think he would have considered this to be a sign that things were still bad for me.

anyway, hope you can come to a decision soon and start feeling better, one way or another. :)

I've gone up to 30+/day but thanks to bee propolis, changing diet, fibre supplements, omegas 3-6-9, probiotics all daily I'm down to 5 or less with the exception of when I have my periods, then anything can happen but usually it stays below 10 a day.

norm for me is 1 - 2 times depending on what/how much I eat.
Flaring will increase with urgency.

I would rarely go beyond 4 or 5 if I'm flaring....haven't had the 20 times a day thing since diagnosis.

My husband averages 10-12 bms a day.

When flaring approx. 17-20 times a day.

sweetmelody, that's a good question. What counts as a bm? What if it's just gas? Or like you said, what if you go back within 5 sec. to the bathroom?

I go by, if it feels like you're gonna pass something (which I would at least pass mucus when I had issues with it) then it counts as a BM...I've even had times when I just finished wiping only to have to "go" more, very frustrating.

Those are definitely frustrating...I agree that anything that is passed and is visible on the tp is a bm.

Then by that logic, I'm going about 15-20 times a day! I hate those faux bm's, nothing but gas & mucous... that's why I've been wearing a pad 24/7 for the last few months. And with a fistula, the mucous just leaks out all the time. nice, huh! I count the times I get up off the toilet, wipe, then sit right back down as "one" too.... I don't mind the frequency so much as the urgency. But yes, getting up 3 times a night every night does take it's toll! Last night was particularly bad, must've been up 6 times, then the cat woke me up early anyway! Re. my 2nd thoughts on surgery- I'll be having them right up to the second they put me under, no doubt. During a "bad" flare, it's been up to 25 times a day, and the lowest it's ever been is probably around 3 a day, right in the beginning of my Remicade use. I believe my #'s will go up in the next month or so, since today I started seeing blood again & I have no infusions scheduled. Whatever.

The past 5 or 6 months now, it's 1-3 times per day and I *think* I am in remission. My BM aren't what they were before my diagnosis but maybe that's then and this is now and I just have a new normal for me. When I had my bad flare last year, I didn't count but I know it was 15+ times per day at least.

How did you manage to get a fistula with having UC?  Fistulas are prone to CD and almost never present with UC because the inflammation in UC remains surfacable unlike with CD where the inflammation can go through the many (all) layers of the intestinal tract leading to a fistula.
