I didn't want to mention anything because the last time I tried to taper off Colazal, it didn't go so well.  However, this time I can tell that this remission is different then the others.  I've been feeling awesome Uc wise and have been for quite a while now.  So I thought I would try to taper off the Colazal to try and get some actual form to my stool.  I wanted to see if it was the Colazal that was making the "mush".  I have reduced my 9 a day by 1 a month - I know it's a super slow taper but I didn't want to take any chances.  After my first taper, I had strange abdominal twinges.  They never hurt, but it sort of felt like being pregnant and the baby was moving.  And no, I'm NOT pregnant - impossible to be at this stage. :)  But I noticed more form to my stool.  So on the second month of my taper (I'm taking 7 a day now), I have even more form, less frequency and/or urgency.  I actually have been going only 1-2 times a day now.  Another reason I want to see if I can get off the Colazal is because I have been having these random rashes.  Since I have a high sensitivity to sulfa, I know that Colazal doesn't have a direct form of Sulfa, that maybe Colazal is causing these rashes though.  It's just a theory I want to try.  Also, these headaches that I have EVERY single day is getting to be a bit too much.  Since starting Colazal, my headaches are constant.    Has anyone here had a successful taper to getting off any 5-ASA and being strictly on 6mp or Imuran?

Trust me when I say this: I know my body and how it reacts - so at the first sign of trouble, I will up my dosages again.

Sherry....I think it's a good idea since you are sensitive to meds and 5ASA meds can also be a culprit aside from only the sulfa.

By tapering one a month...that's good.

I think, however, you should stay at a dosage where you find you are having less symptoms....but over the period of a month, you'll know.

I definitely support you trying it out.....

Many docs start at a high dosage of meds and then taper....some docs start at a low dosage and increase. I think the latter is better, because some of the med side effects such as loose stool or diarrhea will be noted if it goes too high.

Keep us informed as to how you're doing.

At the conclusion of NIH Phase 2 (of 4) clinical trials of Colazal last year, the recommended daily dose was lowered from 9 to 6 capsules. So that's a valid reason in itself for you to try tapering down to 6 daily, then see how you feel. It may end up relieving your headache/bm consistency issues. It works better than any of the other 5-ASAs for me, but I can't stay on 6 or more capsules daily for longer than 10 weeks; my eyelids start to puff/itch around that point. I'll be interested to find out what decisions on dosage come out at the end of Phase 4 clinical trials, which, I'm guessing, will become available late in 2009. Good luck with your taper! / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC; currently on 3 Colazal daily for maintenance of remission)

I have always had some sort of symptom and never really have been in a true remission so it got me wondering if it was because of the 5-ASA's. That they were preventing me from getting well instead of healing me. I think that maybe it was doing a combination of both if that makes sense. I truly am starting to feel a bit better after tapering down. It could be in my head, I dunno. I still had slight urgency - though it's not the kind you get with a flare, but now that is getting better too.

Old Hat, so you're only on 3 Colazal a day and nothing else?? I think that's awesome! Btw, have you thought of creating a signature so you don't have to keep retyping all the info?

Sherry, I take an occasional Rowasa, too, maybe once or twice in a 4-6 week period. Also Centrum Silver daily multivitamin ('cause I'm "over 50") + 1 daily glucosamine500/chondroitin400 tablet for joints-- these have my gastro's approval. I try to watch diet so as to minimize food additives like MSG & dyes, transfats & high salt/sugar content & avoid caffeine + carbonated drinks. Experience has taught me that I HAVE to be careful about these things, or the 5-ASAs won't be enough to prevent flaring. And yes, I think about creating a signature every now and then; thanks for asking. / Old Hat
