Hi, I'm currently taking 40mg pred to try to get a flare up under control - have taken this drug numerous times before so know what lovely side effects I have to look forward to. I can handle pretty much everything apart from the moon face (I know I'm vain) - does anyone have any tips on how to limit this. I don't even know what it is I read online that it is fluid retention but my doctor told me that the body deposits fat differently and it it is actually fat. Any tips would be welcome. Thanks

I know what you're going through and it sucks. I was on 40mg for close to 3 months before I slowly took myself off of it.

1) Limit your salt intake. That is where a majority of the moon face comes from. You will still get the moonface, but it shouldn't be as severe.
2) Try exercising. I ran and played basketball. This should help with the weight gain.

Hope this helps!

I hate moon face. Have it right now :( Mine won't got away until I'm off the pred... It also started after day three on pred this round...

I've heard bronzer can help "hide" or conceal it...

I second the sodium comment.  I am tapering down from 40mg right now and have been super strict on the salt, and (knock on wood) have yet to get moon face.  Some foods are also natural diuretics (sp?) like celery and watermelon if you can tolerate them.  Your pain is felt for sure though!  Moon face is one of the worst parts of taking pred.

my doc always puts me on every other day pred.  i'm currently on 30 mg every other day.  this helps tremendously with side effects.
Diagnosed in 1999, hospitalized once.  Not responsive to meds.  Currently on 12 Asacol, , 8 ampules of Gastrocrom, 6 grams Colestid, flagyl, remicade for my UC.  Also have migraines and take B-4, B-2, for the prevention of them.
Deciding whether or not to have surgery at this time.
