Finally I'm getting somewhere!  I had the EMG and it wasn't too bad.....until he tested my back.  Boy was that painful.  But his diagnosis is spinal stenosis - early stages perhaps which is why maybe it didn't show on the MRI.  But I go in to see my pain doc in a few weeks and we will see what he has to say and what he plans to do.  But I feel as if finally I am accomplishing something - that I finally have a name for my lower back pains!  He said too that my nerve impulses were delayed in my right arm and hand but that could be due to my Raynauds.

Wow....finally is right! Although it's not a great diagnosis and we never want any of what we have, there's a relief in knowing.

I know what spinal stenosis is...just don't know what is done for it. Who now will you be seeing for it?

I guess I will be seeing the pain doc for now until they can determine why I have it. The doc I seen today said it was unusual to see spinal stenosis in someone as young as me. But usually they have you do excersizes or p/t, perferably Nsaids (but we know how that goes), Tylonel or stronger for pain, steroid injections into the spinal canal to relieve inflammation, back braces and for severe cases, surgery. I still don't know what I'm up against but it's a relief to know that NO it's not in my head and YES the pain is definately real. I swear sometimes when doctors can't find out whats wrong with you that it makes you start to second guess yourself ya know?

that is great news, now you can work on getting better. Though sometimes, I wish I did not know why I had edema (for a few seconds) but am glad to know what I have and working towards something instead of just wondering.

Could this have been a side effect from any drugs you had been taking?

Hope you are on the road to recovery very soon~!

I have spinal stenosis. It was diagnosed by MRI. My Dr. sent me for physical therapy and the therapist taught me some exercises to do at home which I did. After about 4-5 months my back started feeling much better. It still hurts but not nearly as bad as it was. I can do nearly anything I want without much pain.

I hope you get some relief. Back pain affects everything that you do. It's miserable. Good luck.

Thanks guys :) Yes, I'm not sure I want that diagnosis but I'm glad that I finally found one! I was getting ready to throw in the towel say forget it - I'm gonna just suffer in silence! My hubby kept rooting me on because he kept reminding me that if it's serious and if it gets worse - how better off will I be???

Bumtum, do you know what is causing your SS?

Sherry - I'm so glad you got an answer! The second guessing yourself is so hard on a person emotionally and mentally. Knowing it's not "in your head" is such a big thing.

I hope some answers on how to help the pain are coming soon :)

Hey, that's ok Tab. I know that life can be crazy and there are many of threads I miss too. I had a rough couple days with my back. I don't know, but I think the EMG aggravated my back a bit because I've been getting sharp shooting pains down my buttocks and legs along with the horrible back spasms. I see my pain doc in a couple weeks but I called my GI to find out which pain meds are ok for me to take. So I think I might call my pain doc tomorrow to see if he will prescribe me something. I think I am going to give the Ultram another shot but maybe cut the pill in half to see if that will work. But my GI said that Ultram, Vicodin, Darvocet, or T3 are safe for Uc. I just hate being loopy but I don't like being in pain either.

Marty, I hope I can get something done to help me. I don't know yet what is causing the spinal stenosis and I'm sure once we know, we can take the right steps.

I have taken Darvocet before. It did not affect my UC at all. That being said it didn't help my shoulder pain either! I think the key is to start off at a low dose pain killer to see how it is going to affect you.
