hi everyone- I know the subject of diet has been discussed over & over & OVER here... and I'm not much of a believer in the dietary "cures". But- 2 things I can't figure out. Everyone seems to be in agreement that sugar is the worst for their UC- mine too! I'm trying to lower my sugar intake- for those of you who avoid high-fructose corn syrup, do you eat regular corn syrup? Brown rice syrup? Honey? Agave nectar? Any of the "alternate" sweeteners? (not the fake ones, those are utter junk). And another question- which do you find easier to digest- soluble or insolube fibers? I know soluble slows things down in the gut, insoluble speeds them up. I try to balance the 2 types out, but I seem to alternate from days where I don't go to the bathroom much at all, to days where I'm going CONSTANTLY... not D, no blood, but LOTS of stool. It's like every 3rd day or so, forget it, I'm in the bathroom 10 times. It's annoying more than anything else, cause when I have those days it's a given that everywhere I go, I better know where the bathrooms are! And it's not due to high food intake- I don't eat that much on a good day! Do any of you take any fiber supplements, like Metamucil? Does it help with regularity? Not that any of us are "regular", but I hope you get my drift. I'm thinking of even taking a T of Milk of Magnesia every night to even things out. I plan to ask my GI if that's ok when I see him next.

I take two Metamucil wafers almost every day. Some days I take FiberChoice chewable tablets instead. They are both good sources of fiber. I feel like the Metamucil has helped bulk up my stools a bit. They aren't as loose as they used to be. I haven't taken the FiberChoice enough to to know if it helps or not but it has inulin in it which is supposed to benefit the colon’s mucosal layer.

You might look into stevia as a natural sweetener alternative. It has no known toxicity like fake chemical sweeteners, doesn't impact blood sugar and is less likely to make any gut ecology imbalances worse. Recommended on the Body Ecology Diet.

I've wondered about those Metamucil wafers- do you find they help to keep you fairly regular, like most of your bm's in the morning, fairly formed? After an awful day I got my period this evening, so I should've known the bad day was related to something! Still sucks though. I don't really use sweetener, per se, but I do try to avoid high-fructose corn syrup. I just wonder about procesed foods, if you're better off eating ones with natural sugars. Do you cook with the agave nectar or stevia? You can, I believe. I suppose one would be better off making cookies or sweets with those, then using store-bought stuff. unless you buy stuff that's from the health food store, or the all-natural section of the supermarket, stuff that uses natural sweeteners anyway.
