I have been on Lialda for about 6 weeks and I am feeling sorta flarey. I want to change to another med, but I'm not sure which one I should try next.

I was on sulfasalzine (3 pills 2 times a day) and that seemed to work, but I got headaches.

My worst symptom is the urgency. I have no blood and very little mucous. I have horrible gas. I didn't experience the gas with the sulfasalazine. I am using canasa suppositories at night, but I'm also thinking about asking for some rowasa enemas. Please let me know which one works better for you.

I would prefer something that would release as far down in the colon as possible.

I was diagnosed with pancolitis 2 years ago. The meds kicked me into remission right away. I have flare-ish symptoms from time to time, but no blood and no mucous.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated. The doc is going to call me back after 1:00 pm (pacific time). So I need advise pronto.

Have you tried Colazal or Asacol? How about rectal meds?

The Rowasa enemas are worth a shot. The Canasa probably reach the lowest part of the rectum the best, but they don't contain as much medication as the enemas. You can increase the Canasa to 2 a day if you're on the 1,000 mg suppositories. Have you tried that? Asacol or Colazal (sp?) might help you, too. I think Colazal has helped a lot of people here, and I believe it may release medication lower in the colon more effectively than Asacol, but I'm not sure about that.

I have taken both rowasa and canasa and I would say that canasa gave me the most trouble. I was always gassy and continued to have the urgency. Canasa helped stop the bleeding and mucus for me until the colitis spread thru the rest of my colon. Try the rowasa - it is a dream drug for me. I have been taking it for two weeks and I can feel an improvement. I also take Lialda and I have not had any trouble with it at all, at least not that I can tell. My flare is not yet gone, but I feel better.

There are steroid rectal meds.....liquid, foam and suppositories. Give them a try.

I had been taking Lialida for about 5 months before I decided to not take it any more. I didn't so much feel like I was going to flare. I was just having really bad migranes and hair loss and sick to my stomach. But you may just be having different side effects. Have you talked with your GI yet about what is going on? I was taking Canasa also but that just seemed to upset my colitis even more. That might be the problem for you. Not so much the Lialida as the Canasa.
Best of luck to you!
