I've been doing ok with my Uc and I've been tapering my Colazal - which btw is still going good.  In fact, I feel great after reducing from 9 to 6 after my slow taper!  But before I started to taper, I had a bright red blood on the tp when I would wipe and my tush would burn and itch.  So I took a  peek and found a hemmie.  Not a very large one but it's mostly internal so I believe the bleeding was coming from that.  So I bought some Prep H to see if that would help.  I have not been very vigilent about using it but yesterday my tush was burning and itching more then normal so I used one in the early after noon.  As soon as I inserted the suppository, my rectum was burning and 5 minutes later I had intense cramps that I had to expel the supp.  Is that normal for Prep H?  I thought it was just a fluke or something I ate.  So then last night, I did another one and I didn't have the burn but I still had the cramps.  I woke up this morning, went to the bathroom after a while and the Prep H seems to work because I no longer have the butt burn.  But I was just wondering why would I cramp from using Prep H.....any ideas?

Hi, Before I was diagnosed, about a month ago, with UC, I assumed I had internal hemmeroids and was hoping that was all it was.  Anyhow, the symptoms lasted a couple of months and I did try preporation H and I did not have that burning or cramping following using it.  Maybe it's not hemmeroids?  I have no idea, I just thought I'd let you know my ecperience.  Good Luck!  Bellski

I've never had that response to Preparation H either. Sounds like you may be sensitive to some ingredient in it. You might ask your pharmacist what else you could use that has a different active ingredient.

I had no cramping from the prep h supps and used them on and off for 3 months. the burning and itching yes (but think that is just from the hemi).

I just started steriod supps, got a script from my GI and those are fine. I am getting I think 6.5mg of steriod from them, so it is not a lot but I am trying to taper so that part of it is a bit inconvenient. have been on it 3 days (total amt of time will be 2 weeks).

Hope you feel better soon, I know how bad those little monsters feel!

Thanks :) Yeah, I foung it strange that I would only have the cramping AFTER I used the supp and only when I use it so I doubt that it's Uc related. So maybe I am sensitive to something in them. I just didn't know if it was normal to cramp or not while using it so thanks for clarifying that for me.

Hi Red,

I don't know how your GI is about you calling in and you asking for him to call in a prescription for you, but there is a gel/cream called Anamantle HC that is hydrocortisone and lidocaine.  The gel has more hydrocortisone than the cream.  Then again, you may be having the cramping due to one of those agents?!!?  Sorry to hear you're having more trouble. sad I can't understand why Prep H would cause cramping.  I have weird reactions to stuff too, though. Ahh phooey.

PC - the gel/cream - I take it that it's not a suppository? Mine is mostly internal so if it's a cream then I doubt it would work right for me anyway. Unless that comes in suppositories?

Hi Red,
The Anamantle comes in a nice little bottle with a tip like an enema tip with holes everwhere so the cream gets released into the rectum. Yesterday I was having so much discomfort and I used one for the first time in a while, I am glad I used it cause it helped a little.

Thanks Pc! :) If this continues to bother me I will mention this to my GI. I have an appt with him in a few weeks. However, if my hemmie gets worse I will call him before then.
