I just wanted to see if this happens to anyone.  I have been in the midst of a flare for probably 6 weeks now - blood, cramping, mucus, generally feeling bad.  I saw my GI doc the beginning of April and he presribed Lialda and Rowasa.  I thought I was getting somewhat better, although I have cramping almost every time I eat and some mucus, but it's better than before.  Today I had a BM - loose but not full-fledged D.  W/in minutes I was racked with incredible abdominal and rectal pain.  I am in so much pain I am dizzy.  Also I became somewhat bloated.  This all happened in minutes.  Have you ever had this experience?  I can barely handle the pain b/c it is so bad.  I really feel like I am being ripped in two.

Sorry to hear about your recent flare. I have been a flare since March. I have had abdominal pain and cramping since then... it gets worse right before a bm and sometimes after. I also find its extra bad in the night time accompanied by back and sometimes leg pains. Whenever I eat I get sick to my stomach and have not had much of an appetite lately. Most times I get very weak and dizzy and have to have a nap in the afternoons. Sometimes I think maybe I have a stricture but not too sure as I never had one before. Most of my bms are soft but formed but also really skinny. I am waiting to see my GI for more info.

It's definitely colon/rectal spasming from inflammation that's happening..after you eat, the sigmoid and rectum will be affected through peristalsis...kind of like "open the chute for dumping to make more room, I'm bringing in more stuff".

When you're having a bm....it's like the rectum can't hurry enough to get all the stuff out..kind of puking from the butt..lol!  I call them white-knucklers...I usually do lots of whimpering during them and feel I could sleep the rest of the day afterward, I'm exhausted.

An antispasmodic should help....I use dicyclomine.

Are you using the Rowasa nightly for the past 6 weeks?

are you expecting your period soon?

Did you only have this once today or throughout the day?

White knuckler, that is so funny. I whimper thru them too. Honestly, today was completely unexpected. I have UC w/ constipation and Rowasa really helps to get me going, so to speak. Today I felt the incredible urge to go so I hurried to the restroom and went. I didn't feel like I was completely done, but I couldn't go anymore. I went back to the office and minutes later I was racked with pain. This has never happened before. I am still in agonizing pain - I have taken pain killers but I have not yet found relief. There is no getting away from the pain - it hurts to walk, sit, lay in bed. I left work because I was almost in tears and went to bed. I can't imagine that I'm having another flare or maybe the initial flare hasn't gone away yet. I am getting really frustrated with everything. It feels like I am fighting a losing battle. The UC has consistently gotten worse over the last few months. I can no longer take canasa b/c it is ineffective. The Lialda and Rowasa have definitely not kicked in like I thought they would. I still eat b/c I love food, but now I have to deal with the consequences whereas before I could eat anything, anytime except during a flare.

I am kind of worried about what happened today because I am still in pain and I actually feel sore from the pain. Why would it come on so quickly? I've had the ripping pain before but it has never lasted this long.

I am expecting my period - probably next week. I have an IUD so I can't be sure b/c I don't really have periods anymore. A day of spotting and I'm done.

I don't think I explained this in my signature so my story is that I had a colonoscopy in February and it was determined that I have universal colitis which explains the pain on my left and right side.

Thanks for any input you can offer.

that's awful -- maybe you ate something that didn't agree with you? what kind of painkiller did you take? I can't take anything except tylenol without stomach pains. Either drugs or foods might have exacerbated things, especially around your period.

Maybe put in a call to your doc and see if he thinks an antispasmodic will help you -- quincy really explained it best what's probably going on in your guts. I used to have "white knucklers" but I take generic nulev now and they are almost completely gone.

I hadn't eaten anything in hours. I had cereal for breakfast, but that was it. It isn't the same kind of pain as when I eat something that doesn't agree with me. It truly is a gut-wrenching pain. It is not an ache or cramping, it is intense pain. The pain encompasses my entire abdominal area - my stomach doesn't hurt at all and I don't feel nauseated either. My last terrible flare started this way which scares the crap out of me. Isn't UC lovely?

I took 2 darvocet and it didn't touch the pain. It has been 10 hours and I am still in pain; not quite as bad, but still there.

Thanks for helping me out.
