I've found fiber beneficial. However, if by "regular" you mean less diarrhea, you might want to try l-glutamine.
Diagnosed with ulcerative colitis spring 1999.

Maintenance dose sulfasalazine.
Probiotics, l-glutamine and fish oil caps. George's aloe vera juice. Oregano oil antibiotic, antiviral, antifungal.

I take metamucil nightly and find it beneficial in bulking the stool, but when I was flaring with alot of blood my Doc recommended that I stop using it until the bleeding was under control. He told me that it might be a little irritating to the colon.  But once the bleeding stopped I started  taking  a small amount and increased it slowly.
Diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis 1995
Salofalk Tablets and suppositories daily
Bio-K Probiotic daily
multivitamin
metamucil nightly

My GI told me to take fibre supplements daily for the rest of my life and I'm glad I listend...yes it helped stop the D and gave me formed BM's (often the TP is clean when I wipe they're so formed) and many, many other benefits, some are, I can eat fibreous foods with no problems of gas or bloating, which is another thing it's stopped in general, no matter what I eat, I'm not gassy or bloated...it also helped cut back some on my frequency and no more mucus (trips to the can for just mucus) just normal mucus which everyone has.

It's important to take plenty of water (which you should regardless on a daily basis) and to stick with it as it can cause gas and bloat which is normal until your system adjusts (took me 3 months but was well worth it)...it's been five yrs now and I'm still taking one prodiem daily (similar to metamucil).

It aids with C and D....

I am taking pure psyllium (without any other ingredient) on daily basis – about 2 tablespoons in the morning.  It is helping a lot  - particularly it took care of my mucus.

Yes - fibre helps, but it REALLY depend what type. The only thing that has ever helped me is Psyllium seed husk, and the most accessible source of that is Metamucil. This helps "bulk" the stool and absorbs liquid from the faeces. The problem here, and the temptation for UC people is to use more and more as they progress into a flare. You CAN NOT do this. It is dangerous and increases risk of toxic mega-colon as well as colon toxicity. Oh, and its painful.

I take 1.5 tsp of metamucil smooth powder dissolved in a glass of water 3 times a day (with food) no matter if I am ok or if I am flaring.

pb4 - funny :-)
