I was wondering if anyone takes Lomotil on a daily basis. If so, how many do you take? Also does anyone have side effects from it? I have a drugged or sleepy feeling for about an hour after I take it.

Hi...Lomotil can immobilise the colon...it's like a narcotic or acts like a narcotic from what I remember reading.

How bad are your symptoms that you need it?

Have you considered to use fibre supplements and maybe dicyclomine to help?

I know I've asked you this in the past...but are rectal meds not something you can use?

I used to take 1-4 pills on a daily basis for months. I started with a low dose for about a week - just 1 pill per day-- and then I waited to see how that agreed with me. Since I had no side effects, I would take 1 before each meal if I felt I needed it.

I still take it occasionally when I'm out with people for dinner since I think it really works for me. I never had a drugged feeling from it; though I suppose everyone reacts differently to things.

There are other similar drugs, I believe, that you could try. Or you could try anti-spasmodic drugs like Levsin, which might give you similar relief for urgency.

UC for the last ten years
Current Meds: 6MP since 2006, Cortifoam
Past Meds: You name it; I've tried it. (Asacol, Colazol, Pentasa, DiPentum, Rowasa, Canasa, Cortenema, sulfasalazine)
5ASA drugs don't work for me. Canasa seems to make me worse.
Alternative treatments I have had success with: Acupuncture, Hypnotherapy

julee...interesting you had no symptoms...I was on it for a few days after 3 weeks of explosive diarrhea...a few years before diagnosis. I was totally stoned but had NOT ONE ACHE ache or pain in my entire body. That in itself was euphoric!! lol!

It helped with the diarrhea....it wasn't anything that I felt good on, however.

What dosage were you on?

I am going about 3 or 4 times a day. They are all urgencies which have lead to 4 or 5 accidents. I have no blood but I do have mucus. I am scheduled for a colonoscopy on June 12. I have problems retaining rectal meds but I may try it again. I saw my GI on Thursday & she gave a script for pred. I am hesitant to take it because of the bad reaction I had to it in the past. it made me very emotional & I felt terrible on it. I can take lomotil & not have any BM's but that can't be too healthy either. I have only 16 more days to teach & plus my sons are in sports so I am running with them after school. I am just trying to get through the rest of this school year without any more incidents. I didn't know how safe it was to take lomotil on a daily basis. I can take it at night & got about a day and a half without BM's. I haven't tried dicyclomine.

Hi Winter, I take Lomotil  every morning before I leave the house.  I have been doing this for over a year now.   I am in remission now  and have been for about almost a year and half but I am still going to the bathroom at least 3 times before I leave in the morning, I have no blood or mucus  and everything is formed.  For me its just peace of mind knowing that once it kicks in I wont have to be panicking about bathrooms.  I don't know if the mind ever stops worring about accidents even when things are ok.  My GI DOC perscribed it for me to take up to 3 daily, but I find 1 in the morning is enough to stop things for the day.  I do get very tired feeling by afternoon but I can deal with that and I will get that buzzed feeling if I don't eat when I take it so I always eat something in the morning and drink lots of water throughout the day.

thanks for the info. I can take one at night & I sleep really good. The next day, the lomotil is still working & I don't have a buzz. I am thinking of taking one every night for peace of mind until I get this school year over. I have a colonscopy scheduled for June. Maybe I will find out more info then.

Your sleep is important....seems like the best time for you to take it. Keep us posted as to how you're doing.

I have been taking it on and off for years. I get drowsy if I take it in the daytime but I am still able to function. It doesn't always work, perhaps because I take it when I am already going to the bathroom too much. I personally would not be able to take it daily because I would never go to the bathroom. Just becareful that you don't get constipated from it. Also, I have tried to take a second one in one day a few times when I was having a rough time, but I get extremely bad cramps and vomiting if I take more than one a day.

I can vouch for the retaining problem. I got tired of wasting 2 bottles to get half to stay in. $14 right back into the toilet, lol.
Here's what I do to solve that problem. I use distilled water in one of my empty enema bottles. Warm it up by just swishing it around in hot water in the sink. I'll use 30ml in, expell. I'll do the other 30 ml and expell it after moving it around a bit. I'll try and do the full 60 ml the second round of warm water. If it goes in really easy and you feel like you could hold it pretty easy, just expell it and move on to the rectal meds. After doing this I usually only use half a bottle of the hyrdocort enemas, as it does the trick. The warm water helps relax the colon, and the 120 ml of warm water also gets rid of anything in that lower colon that's gonna get pressure on it when using the meds, along with stimulating any gas to get on out.

I have been known to take two lomotil at a time when doing airports and airplanes.
