Is anyone healthy and taking a really low dose of medication? I am taking ONLY 4 colazal a day and thats it. I wanna reduce the amount of pills I take a day. I have been perfectly healthy for about 2 years. I am losing a ton of hair on these 5ASA meds! I am wondering if I reduce the amount of meds I take, my hair will stop falling out. (And I am NOT on pred or anything, had ALL my blood tests done, and have no flare-ups since being diagnosed in 06).

Im on only 2 Lialda a day. And I use Rowasa if I feel like it. So yea it is possible. I added probiotics into my regimine but they are natural and make me feel way better. Good luck!
Jeff, 23, Diagnosed July 2007 probably had it since 2005 but no real symptoms till July 2007 *Update 3/25/08: Entire Colon UC*
Lialda - 2.4mg 2x Day
Rowasa 1x (for spot treating and flare ups)
Centrum Multi-Vitamin 1X Day
Probiotics (Started Recently During a Long Flare Seems To be Working Wonders)
Lexipro- 2x Day 10Mg

I recently tried reducing my Colazal dosage to 6 - didn't work so well. So obviously I am going to be on 9 forever! :( You can try reducing your med to see if it helps with the hairloss and at the first sign of trouble, start back up on the last dose that you were good at. Are you taking any supplements for your hairloss?

I actually do not take any meds between flares. I recently started taking salofalk, but have tapered when I was down to one bm a day, no mucous or blood, and now have stopped taking it.

Dx:  UC Proctitis 2006

Meds:  None so far. Garlic works to ease flares. My GI laughed when I told him and said it was just coincidence.

Started Meds:  Apr 9 08 500mg 5ASA (salofalk) to ease flare, tapering.

Diet:  Regular fresh garlic, Biobest yogurt daily, Omega 3 supplements, very limited junk food, carbs and processed food, low fat diet.  Lots of fresh fruit and veggies (limited potatoes).

Added: tumeric and probiotics.

Lialda is 1200mg each....so theklep..you're still on a normal maintenance dosage of 2400mg of mesalamine (which is = 6 Asacol daily).

WOC...are you still losing hair daily? I would suggest that if you are wanting to taper off...to only do it by one pill every week or two.

Have you been on Asacol or Lialda? Maybe a change in 5ASA formulation would help.

*Heather*Status: mini flare Dec 28... tapered to every 4th night
~diagnosed January 1989 UC (proctosigmoiditis)
~5ASA: Asacol (6 daily) + Salofalk enemas (increase for flares tapered to maintenance)
~Bentylol (dicyclomine) 20mg as needed
~vitamins/minerals/supplements
~Probiotic 3(Natural Factors Protec) bedtime + 1 (Primadophilus Reuteri) occasionally
~multi-digestive enzymes as needed ....zymactive 3 - 5x daily
~Ranitidine,Pariet (reflux) Effexor XR 75mg;  Pulmicort/Airomir (asthma)
~URSO for PSC (or PBC) 500mg X 2 daily (LFTs back to NORMAL!!)
My doc's logic.. "TREAT (FROM)BOTH ENDS"  worth it !!!

Yes I am still losing hair daily. I've taken asacol(4 daily), then switched to lialda(2 daily) The main reason I switched was because of hair loss. I am taking a multi-vitamin,fish oil, and biotin(5000mcg) and I haven't noticed any difference. I've been on Biotin for almost 4 months.
