Hello All,

My UC is flaring and currently started on Pred 20mg tapering down and 4 Lialda/day.
Done with my Colonoscopy few days back and Doc said my Colon is angry after performing the proocedure.
Right with my current medications I have 2 BM in the morning and later in the day some kind of pain and sensation of going to restromm comes and goes away in few seconds.
Does anybody have same kind of symptioms during the flare..
Is taking rectal medications(Canasa Suppository) is required when we are on Pred? Wil they work? I used to use Canasa when Iin remission when needed...
I heard so many people saying gaining weight while on Pred, but i did noticed more hungry, and I'm eating more food. but no changes in my weight..Not sure why I'm not gaining weight even after eating lots of food,,fruits..etc
What is this AloeElite.. Did anybody found 100% genuine success after taking this? Is it if we give a try during Flareup...anybody did that? Please suggest

I went to Pharmasy and saw Nature's Bounty Chewable Probiotics...Did anybody tried them? Are these are real probiotics that we can trust?
Right now I 'm taking Danon Yougut with active cultures some times.....Not sure whether these prodcuts are accurate and can be trustable?

It would rally gives me lot of relief if somebody answers my questions....It gives me lots of strength and self confidence if somebody responds........Thanks for the people who are sparring their time to read and address questions postedd.

Thanks in advance.

Your symptoms seem very mild. 2BM a day is not bad. I think your doctor is trying to make sure the flare doesn't actually get out of control.

Canasa is an ASA drug. You should be using it constantly, not "as needed". Yes, you should be using it while on prednisone if that is what your doctor has told you to do.

Prednisone will often not cause any of the major side effects when you are only using it for a short time. You will often just feel hungry, and if you are male, you will often find your sex drive will increase. I am guessing your doctor started you on 20mg and is tapering you down from there. This is normal when a doctor wants to make sure the flare is brought back under control.

I have no opinion on Aloe Elite.

Probiotics can be of use, but the basic thing you need to know is that you want lots of strains of helpful bacteria, and you want a large total bacterial load per probiotic capsule. Capsules are often better then chewable as they do not get released until the capsule reaches the small intestine.

Most yoghurt products are gimmicks, and are not able to deliver a high enough bacterial load to the small intestine. Certainly not enough for UC sufferers as we need quite a high dose as it needs to reach the colon. Yoghurt tastes good, but is not very useful.

Hi Severin,

Thank you !! for your detailed reply.
During my morning Bowels I see some blood with mucus. Later in the day no more bowels unless i eat something which i hurts my stomach. But even with the food it is very confusing..Don't know how long it takes to find out what food is hurting.. Upto now i noticed corn, coffe, butter, cheese, pizza are 100% effecting my UC. I avoided dairy products, spicy food, raw foods..Still need to trace if any other specific foods are hurting.. I started adding lot of fruits like papayya, water melon, banana into my diet..Don't know how these will help in smoothing up my colon.
Right now my biggest concern is with the pain I'm getting suddenly. Abdominal pain starts suddenly and stays for just 15-20 secs and during that time i really feel like going to going to restroom. But when i go to restroom nothing happens.
Is it normal?
What is the probiotic that you take currently...?

Thanks in advance..

Hi Happy Living, I think rectal meds are very important when trying to get a flare under control.  I use them all the time and since I've been in remission I still continue with them but every other day.  Have you tried cortifoam as a rectal med, it's easy to retain plus you can use it throughout the day and still be able to move around without fears of leaking.

As for the probiotics I use a probiotic with 50billion active cells and I take it daily, it has helped me get through my last flare which was the worst I have ever had since I was diagnosed.

When it comes to food everyone is different on what foods irritate them and cause pain.  For me raw veggies, especially romaine lettuce is a killer.  Fruits I find hard, they cause pain except bananas.  Dairy, wheat and corn I avoid if all possible.  I eat tons of rice products, they are non allergenic and don't seem to cause problems.  Bland foods that are easy to digest seem to work well during a flare.  Plus I find anything that has little seeds or grains in it also hard on the colon.   I also take a fibre drink (metamucil) since my colon can't handle any other kinds of fibre during a flare.

As for the aloe I didn't have luck with it in the past, but others like it so it depends on your body if its good for you or not.

Diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis 1995
Salofalk Tablets , salofalk suppositories or cortifoam nightly
Bio-K Probiotic daily
multivitamin
metamucil nightly

Soft fruits that you are eating are good, but don't eat too much as your colon may start to react badly to the extra acidity and fibre.

The pain and need to go to the bathroom, even though you don't actually need to, is one of the most annoying symptoms of UC and common to nearly all UC sufferers.

As for probiotics, I take BIOCeuticals UltraBiotic 45.

Hi there -- I just finished with my first major flare since I was dx'd.  I was on steroids 30mg. tapering down to 5.  By the thrid week I was no better even with the steroids.  the doctor put me on the suppository cassada (spelling?)  and that did the trick.  with in three days i felt much better and after one week i was coming out of the flair.  i plan on asking my doctor to give me a script for this to keep on hand since i am now having regular bm's that i have not had in over 3 years.  as for the probiotics, i drink 2 to 3 of the danactive yougurts - each bottle has 10 million bacteria - this does seem to help me.  i am also going to ask the doctor about vsl#3 which is a medical food that you can order at a pharmacy that is marketed to UC patients - they contain 50 billion bacteria.

good luck!!  i am waiting for the medical community to start colon transplants!!
