Just noticed a swipe of blood on my stool that occured at the tail end of a bowel movement...the rest of the BM was fine.  I have no hemmies and I remember this happening once in awhile where it usuall clears up in a day or so...i have been perfect/in remission for the last 5 mos and I'm wondering if this means I'm out of remission or are these little episodes just part of it all...I just switched from Asacol two days ago to Lialda and am also wonfdering if this could be the cause?

Thanks

If you remember this happening in the past, and it cleared up then i would probably wait a day or two, and go way easy on yourself and hope that it clears up, and then call your GI if it doesnt. Personally I have never seen blood, and then had it clear up on its own. But everyone's different. I have also never had a 5 mo remission, so congrats on that! And i hope this clears up on its own too.

Thanks winnie...I was dx'd with mod UC last year but had been suffering from it for years I'm sure...Asacol on its own would not keep me in remission but adding the rowasa enemas truly helped to do it...this recent slight bleed episode just occured right after I switched from asacol to Lialda two days ago...hmmm...

Hi Bbc,

I frequently have such "episodes" and have come to just accept it as being part of it all. That's just me though. Sometimes these swipes of blood decide to present themselves, other times they don't. It is also possible that you have a small tear or fissure that is causing these streaks of blood. This can sometimes happen if the stool is hard and dry and difficult to pass. I suggest monitoring it over the next several days to see if the amount of blood increases. Usually if it is something like a tear that is causing visible blood, the blood will be bright red.

Thanks.
I do have a fissure but I noticed no blood on the paper just smeared only on the last piece of stool.

That happens to me at times. It does usually clear up on its own pretty quick, unless I am in a flare.

I have this happen frequently.. In fact, currently I'm experiencing a bit of blood mucous at the end of almost every BM. I usually don't start to worry unless the blood starts showing up as drops in the water or more. There was a time when I would wipe and think "WOAH did I just start my period????" and then realize it was definitely not coming from there!

Yeah, okay so maybe that was a little too much info... haha... but just saying, some people freak out and make an appointment at the first sight of blood on the toilet paper, and some wait till it looks like the toilet water is completely red. I wouldn't suggest waiting for the latter like I have, but I would say give it a few days or so and see if it gets better.
Female, 22, Ulcerative colitis (pancolitis) since 1999; GERD; gastritis; osteopenia in hip & lumbar region of spine from long term prednisone use

Current Meds:
10mg Lexapro (for depression/social anxiety)
125mg Azathioprine
4800mg Asacol (Four 400mg tablets, three times a day)

Not currently taking any colitis meds (between insurance plans and doctors) and mildly flaring. Looking into try all possible natural treatments for the time being.

Could be a fissure. You could do a visual check...yes, squat over a mirror and take a look. It'll look like a cut in the anal folds.

Are you using the Rowasa for maintenance?

Thanks guys...

Still on the rowasa for maint but I up'd it to every other night from very 3 days...I also increased the Lialda from 2 to 3 tabs which is much more in line with the dose amount of asacol I was taking. No blood at all so far...thank God :-) .

The blood appeared only at the very end of the BM and there was no blood on the paper so I'd imagine it was not my fissure.

Oh, seems to be probable. A fissure would most likely be on the paper if there's blood in the toilet....at least for me it is, since I do tear mine open frequently with wiping.

How much blood?...like in a blob with some mucus?

A little 1 inch blob on the side of a piece of stool and that piece was the last in the bowel movement so maybe the bleeding was probably higher up in the colon? I have not seen any blood since then thank the Lord :-)

Could it have been something you ate?

It's interesting there was no blood on the toilet paper.

I guess it could be from maybe in the sigmoid area where the stool sits before it's "downloaded" into the rectum for evacuation...

Could be a polyp?

Could be a hemmie that was kind of squeezed during the last part of the bm...but I would think it would be on the toilet paper as well.

Is Lialda in a red/maroon coloured casing similar to Asacol? Could be that. When did you stop the Asacol?

It was blood for sure...the night before I ate some Triscut crackers which are very high in insoluable fiber.

I have no polyps and only a very small internal hemmie but why would only the last piece have the blood then?

Gotta beieve it was from higher up in the plumbing lol...

Thank God all is good now and the Lialda is the same color as Asacol...

Thanks Q
