I switched from Asacol to Lialda back in November with great results. I was in remission and switched just for the convenience of taking less pills every day. When I was on Asacol, I was taking 4 pills, 3 times a day and using Rowasa 1x a week. When I switched, I took 2 Lialda in the morning and Rowasa every few weeks- even though I didn't feel I "needed" it. I was thrilled!! However, lately, I've been under a great deal of stress and it caught up with me. My colitis had stared to flare and increasing my Rowasa wasn't enough to help, even though I thought I caught it early. My GI recommended taking 2 additional Lialda at night and I noticed an improvement pretty quickly. I've also been using Rowasa 2-3 times a week. It's been a couple of weeks and I feel like I'm almost back at remission. I'm relieved b/c last Spring, I had a really bad flare which I could only get under control by being on prednisone for a few months which was a TERRIBLE experience sad

I hope sharing this helps someone else!

4 asacol 3x's per day is 4.8 grams of mesalamine so two tabs @ 2.4 grams were definately not enough.

I have been in remission for about 5 months using Asacol @ 8 pills per day (I use rowasa's every three days) and also just switched (2 days ago) to Lialda for convenience as well, but today I notice some blood on one of my stools. My doc also started me on 2 Lialda per day but that is also not enough to equal the asacol dosage I was on...I think three lialda a day would be better (3.6 grams vs the 3.2 of asacol) for me and that's what I'm going to do...I hope and pray it works.

BTW, what were your symptoms that you were getting to indicate you were out of remission?

I'm glad it's working for you. :-)
Diagnosed 2/29/08 with Mild Universal UC
I've had UC since 2000 but was in remission for most of those 8 years med free
Lialda Colazal & Asacol made symptoms worse, MUCH worse
Not taking any more meds for now. Trying a holistic approach.
