Did anyone not have any or much symptoms before UC? I know alot of people can experience symptoms or signs months or years before being diagnosed with UC. BUt I never had problems. Never really had too much gas, burping, constipation, Diarrhea, etc. ANd I never had pain or mucus.
I am thinking about this b/c I remember my Pre-UC days when I could consume anything in any amount at any time and never have to worry at all about my digestive system. I still find it hard to fathom how my whole system could malfunction like it did.

I remember once about a year before I got my first real symptoms that I had mucous in my BM, no blood or urgency and thought it was just a virus, other than that I was very regular, no problems what so ever.

When my first real symptoms happened, it was suddenly, one morning, blood, mucous, urgency and D. Went on for months, then started to get better on its own.

Dx:  UC Proctitis 2006
Meds:  None so far. Garlic works to ease flares. My GI laughed when I told him and said it was just coincidence.
Started Meds:  Apr 9 08 500mg 5ASA (salofalk) to ease flare, tapering, stopped.
Diet:  Regular fresh garlic, Biobest yogurt daily, Omega 3 supplements, very limited junk food, carbs and processed food, low fat diet.  Lots of fresh fruit and veggies (limited potatoes).
 Added: tumeric and probiotics.

Looking back I can remember in high school having constant diarhea. I mean run as fast as you can to the potty. I didn't think anything of it at the time. I would take Imodium constantly in college b/c if d. I wish I would have realized something was wrong!

As a kid, I had constipation issues and wouldn't go to the bathroom for 7 days. When I went, I did have trouble going but no blood or pain that I remember. I could eat anything with no problems. Then in High School, I would get diarrhea a lot and I carried a bottle of Kaopectate in my purse, but I never paid much attention to it till suddenly the blood started appearing and the pain was unbearable. I was 15 or so.

I can't remember ever really having problems. I got a lot of food posioning and stomach viruses as a child and even as a young adult. I initially had bleeding and at that time they found pre cancerous polyps but then got really sick about a year later and that was when my colon was in really bad shape. My doc early on told me I had IBS and I do remember having urgency issues.

Mine hit suddenly. I remember having really bad cramps one day, then they went away. Soon after I filled the toilet with brilliant bright blood. It scared the you know what out of me. I got a colonoscopy and my first GI told me that I had UC. He said it looked very much like damage done by E-Coli...

When I first got UC I can remember having cramping and mucous, but never the urgency issues I have now. Now-a-days as I age and have had this disease for so long, I have extreme urgency sometimes.... I always remember back to the "care free" days before my the things we take for granted!! nono
33 yr old male. UC for 14 years. 5mg pred (tapering off), 12 pills Asacol per day, Dicyclomine (for cramps), 0.5 - 1mg Atavan per day (anxiety), Fish oil pills, Culturelle probiotics. Recent Endonasal brain surgery to remove non-cancerous hormone producing tumor on pituitary gland (And I am still more afraid of my UC!!)

MBX5 my colitis hit all of the sudden too but without urgency. Now the urgency has gotten worse when my flares aren't under control.

I had IBS and h-pylori and that was sort of the preamble to UC. My cousin is married to someone with UC and he had problems all through high school and wasn't diagnosed until his 30's. I think having symptoms before can kind of depend on whether you saw the doctor right away

I never had troubles either before being diagnosed. One day while I was at work, I had to run to the bathroom with D - thought it was something I ate. Then it happened the next and then the next along with some abdominal pain. I thought it was the stomach "flu". Then came the blood. Nope, I never even had an inkling of stomach issues even as a kid.

According to my mother I never had a solid bm as a baby or child. I have had digestive problems as long as i can remember, bad bm's, pain.... I had my first EGD at 7, dx'd with ulcers at 8, Gerd at 9, ect ect...

So yes. I had lots of symptoms for many many years. I was sent sick everyday of grade school. they tried to hold me back in 5 and 6th grades due to missed days but luckily i kept my grades up and they coulndn't justify keeping back an honor student.

It's part of the reason i have never been comfortable with the dx of UC. I don't understand how someone who suddenly has symptoms out of the blue has the same disease as me, who has always had symptoms. I don't get it.

I had an iron gut for years.... no D, no blood, regular bm's, everything was fine. Then, about 3 months after childbirth, I noticed mucous on my stools... then the D started, then the urgency, then you all know the story from there! But prior to that first sign of mucous, absolutely no problems/complaints about my bathroom habits.

diagnosed with UC '02
Asacol- 8 tabs/day
Remicade infusions
Imuran- 100mgs/day

I had issues maybe about the year or two before, some bleeding, I had a sigmoid and the dr said it was just roids. Then I got hit bad Dec 2002 and ended in the hospital 6 times in a 6 month period. Not fun. Now I'm lactose intolerant (never was before). I attribute that original flareup to jalapeno peppers. When I first had bleeding before the first big flare I had been eating a ton of them. Then right before the big flare I ate a giant bowl of nachos covered in them. Needless to say I make absolutely sure nothing I eat has them in it or even has its juice on it.

Prior to his first actual flare and subsequent diagnosis it is my opinion from all the years we have been together he was dealing with a tolerable IBS situation. He just felt that was his normal bowel habits along with hemmoroids that gave him some discomfort and bleeding and never really delved into it. So I think there were warning signs of some sort that went undiagnosed for a long time.
