I was diagnosed with proctitis in 2006 but first had symptoms in 1997.
I am very overweight and have been for most of my adult life.

My UC has never affected my weight, dieting however has always triggered a flare up!

After I was diagnosed, I stopped trying lo loose weight and consequentially my weight has remained stable for the last 2 years at around 260lb.
This is preferable to the yo-yoing of the previous 20 years, during which my weight would fluctuate by upto 75lb a year.

My UC is moderately stable as long as my weight is stable.

I would however love to be able to loose some weight without sending my bowel into overdrive, mainly because we would like to start a family and I am worried that my weight will cause complications in pregnancy.

I recognize that obesity isn't a common problem with UC, but I cannot be unique in this combination.
Has anyone got any advice?

I have heard that by flucuating your weight 10%, it increases all the hormones that you need to start a family......it is also why you probably go into a flare.  My hormones (and many others here) have a direct coorelation with their hormone levels and flares.  One of my worst flares was during my first pregnancy.  But, the good news is.....if I work out consistantly, I feel much better.  Have you tried just walking every day for 20 minutes?  Also, eating less bread and starches and low, low sugar seem to help my UC and my waistline.  I wish you the best of luck in starting your family and continues good health.

diagnosed with left-sided UC in 1997. (45cm)
Currently on 10mg Prednisone
12 caps of colazal    9 caps Colazal
2 rowasa enemas nightly
35, female

Thanks Lemonhead. That makes so much sense. Hormones effect my UC, it never occured to me that weight also affects hormones. Doh.
I already moderate starches and sugar, but am not currently working out consistantly. I will make an effort to do a little every day and see if that helps.
I used to be pretty good, but I have let it slip over the last 6 months. I live in a beautiful place and have a treadmill for rainy days.

I am in the same postition. The years of pred have put a good 75lbs or more on me. My weight fluctuates 40lbs a year easy. I am currently at 240. I have lost almost ten lbs since gvetting of pred!!

I cannot tolerate fiber at all. I try to eat even half of a "normal" fiber intake and i am in immense pain. My husband and i have decided once i loose 60lbs or so we can start a family. (not his restriction really but mine) So here is my plan.

Eat small meals high in protein low in carbs. Melon seems to do ok as a snack seeing as how its mostly water and it makes me full.

Beginning to work out some. Starting with walks and pilates for stretching. My husband and i found a great deal on a gym opening this summer. 20bucks a month no contract. Luckily for me my husbands degree is exercise science so he is going to help me at the gym to figure out what i can do (some exercises make me have to run to the potty, not what i want to happen at the gym)

I think for us the best idea is to let the weight of slowly. A pound a week if that. In a year i think i wll be much happier. Its when i try to take off weigh faster (weight watchers, lots of salads, ect) that I flare.

Good luck...keep me posted! maybe we can be a weight loss UC support for each other!

Thanks Kelly

I will keep you posted.
I am UK based so it will also be interesting to see how our medical support differs over the next 12 months re: weight loss, UC & pregnancy.

I am very intersted to see how my docs deal with pregnancy. My Gi and OB differ on a lot of issues. I am hoping to be off of imuran by this time next year so that i could get pregnant in the fall. We shall see...Good luck!
