Hi,

In the other thread I'd started last week, some of you posted that I should have been prescribed folic acid along with my 2000MG/day of Sulfalazine. Last week I was in a bit of a depressed state after being diagnosed with UC so I couldn't fully comprehend the necessary treatment. But today I'm feeling just lousy. I think I'm lacking in vitamins such as potassium, iron, and probably folic acid. I used to take multi-vitamins as well as iron supplements. Now it's been almost 2 weeks since I've had any because I didn't take last week or the week before in prep for the colonoscopy.

I have a viactiv multi-vitamin with me at work (flavor guides, not chewable). I was wondering if this was okay to take with the sulfalazine? I took my last Sulfa pill around 12:30pm. It's now 3pm. I probably won't take the next one until around 6pm or 7pm (depending on how my commute goes).

I tried to call my doctor to ask but the receptionist said Tuesdays he's in the surgical center all day and I should call back tomorrow with questions. Since I'm feeling so weird today, I'd rather take the vitamins now.

My other thought was to drink some orange juice since that's accessible at work. Any other drink/fruit/veggie will have to wait until tonight.

Thanks so much!

I know I'm stressing over the little things, but I'd rather be cautious than stupid.

Hey! Just to clarify...you want to know if you can take a mutli-vitamin w/ sulfasalazine? I always take a multivitamin. I take mine first thing in the morning w/ my morning meds. Personally I can't tolerate iron so I take a children's vitamin.

It is okay to stress over the little things. This disease can be overwhelming at times.

Sorry, yes, simply my question is can I take a multi-vitamin with Sulfasalazine.

Thanks for the answer. That's the one I was hoping for, of course. I also wasn't sure if I had to separate the vitamin by like 2-3 hours between other meds. But if you take yours with your morning meds, that answers that question too.

Hi Kasey,
I have been taking 2 multi vitamins a day for the past 2 - 3 months while taking 3 grams of sulfasalazine. This was a mistake on my part, I started taking the viactiv calcium pills. I first bought the vanilla flavor and didn't care for them, so I then bought what I thought was berry flavored slides (calcium). The other day I just realized that the berry flavor is not calcium, they are a multi vitamin. It took me 2 bottles to realize that. They are the same shape and color bottle, just grabbed them at the store, didn't pay attention. Normally I do take 1 multi vitamin, and my GI knows this. It shouldn't be a problem for you at all. I do take prescription folic acid 1 mg per day, which like I said before is usually prescribed along with the sulfasalazine. Hope that answers your question. Hope you see some improvement.......

A multi vitamin is a good idea. I never really cared for taking them until I was dx'd - then because there is a chance we don't absorb things correctly, I decided it was in my best interest to take one. Sometimes it takes a few tries to find one that works with your system.

Additional folic acid is also a good idea for Sulfasalazine users. There is something with the sulfa that extracts or prevents adequate absorption. Since you are in the "child bearing years," it's never a bad idea either.

There are a few vitamins that you don't want to take together as they prevent the other from being absorbed. But that's something to look into when you start taking seperate supplements. But as for your sulfasalazine with a multi - you're okay there :)

You might want to look into Forvia, a multivitamin that is specially compounded for IBD patients. /Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC; currently on 3 Colazal daily for maintenance of remission)

Thanks everyone. I will definitely look into Forvia. The Viactiv ones just taste sooo good. But I'd rather have one that's specifically designed for IBD.

I took the multi-vitamin and felt much better afterwards. I was definitely lacking in something.
