hi people! I just have to vent- right now, there are beautiful cherries, berries, & all sorts of yummy summer fruits out--of course, all these "skinned" & "seeded" things we should avoid, so I'm told. I don't- I can't help it! I have a huge bag of cherries with me rightn ow... they are just too darned good! I don't see that they hurt me any more than anything else. What about you guys, do you avoid these fruits just becasue, or do you find they irritate you? Yum....

I don't find that any fruit or vegetable irritates me when eaten in moderation. If I ate an entire bag of cherries or strawberries, I would have a soft stool... but "normal" people without IBD can have that same reaction to too much fruit.

My GI says I can eat what I want if it doesn't irritate me. Nothing does, so I eat what I like. Moderation is the key.
Proud new mom of a beautiful baby boy!

yeah, I'm with you 2- fruits don't bother me much at all, unless I eat tons in one day. Which I rarely do! And it's funny, every IBD diet book I've ever read stated that you should avoid thefruits with seeds/skins. That's one of the reasons I don't put much stock into any one particular IBD diet. Also, my GI has never, ever mentioned diet to me- pro or con. He did ask at our first visit if I noticed any particular food that aggravated me... My reply was "Yeah, all foods!"

I am lucky, I can eat all the fresh veggies and fruit I want, which is good because I LOVE them.

The other day I had one strawberry, ONE!! After I ate it, I felt horrible. If the stuff doesn't bother you, then go for it! I am a pineapple addict lately.

As long as I don't overdo it I'm fine. I eat several apples w/ the skin a week. We have an awesome farmer's market...I'm going to have to get some cherries. I love those things!

Cherries don't bother me, Apples do sometimes unless I take the skin off, Strawberries do always (even if I just have one), bananas I can tolerate and I try to eat them as much as possible. And oranges I like but they make my stomach burn sometimes..

If they aren't hurting you more than anything else, then I would go ahead and eat them. My GI said I could eat whatever I wanted unless I notice a certain food bothers me. I love berries and can't wait until they are in season again.

Grapes, cherries, strawberries all seem to help...

Oranges, pomegranets(?), anything citrus seems to hurt...

LOL and for me it's the opposite...strawberries kill me even now in remission.  For some reason cantaloupe bothers me too, but honeydew doesn't.  Fresh pineapple isn't the best for me, and too much watermelon bothers me (which STINKS because I love watermelon).

But it's not summer without nice, fresh, ripe, chilled, yummy fruit!!! tongue

Since you guys are on the topic... here's some food for thought..

According to Housekeepings Quick And Simple Magazine...

Cherries contain phytochemicals known to reduce INFLAMMATION.. eating these can significantly reduce aches and pains. They recommend eating a handful a day.

Eggs, because they are rich in choline <an element that helps detoxify the liver> and actually reduce cholesterol buildup in the process. They recommend eating one a day.

Apples contain flavonoids which are powerful nutrients that help prevent COLON cancer as well as lung and prostrate cancers. They recommend eating one a day.

:O) Good on you guys !!

According to this thread the main culprits that bother our UC are oranges and strawberries.

I can eat just about any fruit, but I do it mostly in the morning after I have had a glass of water.  theoretically if you eat fruit or something with sugar, and fruit have fructose, then it will not digest properly and fement in your digestive system which would probably cause problems with us.

I have found that oranges DO NOT agree with me what-so-ever.. I can feel immediate effects after eatting only a few slices. As for the strawberries.. I had been eating alot of them and then thought they may have been contributing to my flare so I cut them out... and still flaring.. same symptoms.. so I "think" I am okay with the strawberries.

Got2Believe.. was just wondering if you are back to work since you lost your job in '07? I am only asking because I am in the process of a possible job/benefits loss. They basically called me and told me they were cutting off my benefits if I don't go back to work at least part-time. I am still in the same condition as when I left on sick leave so I just can't see myself struggling to get back to work <restaurant business>. I might just sit it out and when the time comes.. find a job where there is less stress and I can sit all day like at a call center.

Looks like canteloupe, oranges, and maybe strawberries.......are not good.

Don't  know about everyone else, but Cherries really seem to help.....However, at $4/pound (is everything $4/something these days?) it's a delicacy...  tongue

Wow, I eat tons of pineapple with no problem! I figure it's a decent fiber source too, cause it's so fibrous. I'm always buying those little fruit cup 4 packs, the diced pineapple or mixed fruit. With no aded sugars, of course. Melons I can handle fine also. Oranges I don't really like, but orange juice I love!!!!! And I think it is a little rough on my gut, the acid & all. But I still drink a small glass every AM. Today will be a low-fiber day for me- I've been up for about 3 hours & already pooped 5 times! I ate a lot yesterday though, not just fruit but a lot in general. It's so annoying- I have to leave for my daughter's swim class at 9:30am- so I'm up by 6:00am to ensure I have enough time for my numerous bathroom trips! I hate the time involved with UC-style pooping. but anyway- I do love summer fruit!

I don't avoid anything except apple and cucumber peelings because my mom makes me peel them. The cherries are so good right now! I love starfruit, but can't find it in the store. Sometimes citrus hurts my stomach and causes acid reflux (usually orange juice).
