Hi, I missed taking my meds for a few days and for the last 2 days I've been having 6-10 bm with a lot of blood and a lot of cramping. I have been in remission over 2yrs and I want to keep it that way. For the last 2 nights I've been using rectal meds to try and stop this. Any advice? It's been so long since I had a flare I can't remember what to do other than tough it out. Any ideas?

You should increase the Colazal to 6-9 Capsules daily in addition to using the generic Rowasa. My gastro, who subspecializes in IBD, advises to stay at the higher dosage for at least 3 months once a flare has started. Good luck with zapping it! / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC; currently on 3 Colazal daily for maintenance of remission)

You could try the rectal meds twice a day. Best way to get it back under control is to be really consistent with the rectal meds. I always stop too soon, or taper too fast, or just get sick of it and miss doses. So basically, I'm saying not to be an idiotic like me. :)

Have you checked in with your doctor?
-------
UC for the last ten years
Current Meds: 6MP since 2006, Cortifoam
Past Meds: You name it; I've tried it. (Asacol, Colazol, Pentasa, DiPentum, Rowasa, Canasa, Cortenema, sulfasalazine)
5ASA drugs don't work for me. Canasa seems to make me worse.
Alternative treatments I have had success with: Acupuncture, Hypnotherapy

sodbuster19...What rectal meds are you using?

It'll take time for the flare to heal since you're going so often...try to stay on them until you're "normal"...then start to taper. The tapering process is what makes a difference so that you get to a maintenance level.

We all at times don't take our meds....but hopefully you'll see the validity in being faithful to taking them.

Why are you on the dosage of Colazal of 4 daily....did you taper to that dosage or did the doc suggest for you to use only that amount. Not to say it's not a high enough dosage...but you might need to up if your symptoms get worse while on the rectal meds.

I'm taking generic Rowasa. As for the amount, when I started taking the Generic Colazal, I started at 4/day(2 in am 2 in pm) then I went up to 3pills 2x a day then 3x3 now I'm taking 4pills 3x a day.
