Hi everyone,
I'm just wondering if anyone has sucessfully come off azathioprine, and what lenght of time they were on it
my GI has been very vague about it,I have severe left-sided U C. (35 cm ) for 2yrs and have been in hospital four
times with servere bleeding anemia etc, they say ive never acheived full remission, athough I,m not bleeding at the moment and have never had diahrea My GI has offered surgery or remicade, and thinks the azathioprine is unlikely to work, the thing is I feel quite ok at momment I have no sign of colitis in the tail end,my GI 's words not mine, but the left side is just as bad as ever he with a carpet of polys etc. I feel rightly or wrongly that most of my symptoms now are the of two years of side effects of drugs and I'd just like to quit all the meds inthe hope I may feel myself again, pre UC which came on suddenly I never took so much as an asprin.
In two years I've two lots of IV steriods, nearly constant prednislone, three months of cyclosporin, pentasa, and alsorts of ascol and other rectal meds, now I,m just taking 150mg daily azathioprine.I'm just fed up with meds.
Thanks your views and experiences, are much appreicated,if your worse I know there are people out there suffering more that me,and if your better it gives me hope

I was on azathioprine for a couple of years. My doctor said there was no need to taper, just stop taking it. I wasn't able to tell that it was helping much, so I really didn't see any difference. Plus I started on Remicade at the same time.

I suspect if you go off all medications, you'll most likely have a severe flare and surgery may no longer be optional. But who knows, you could have no symptoms. It all seems to be a game of chance sometimes.
