Hi all.  I'm a new member with a 5 yr old diagnosed with UC last year.  She has had eczema and food allergies since infancy, and her UC probably started around age 3 when she began passing just mucus in her stool.  Anyone heard of a connection between such allergic conditions and UC?  There's obviously some problem with her intestinal integrity... maybe she has some problem metabolizing histamine in the colon?

I wouldn't doubt it since both are linked to the immune system overreacting.

So here is my understanding. Uc'ers are thought to have an over active immune system (the jury is still out on this one but I believe it). Both eczema and allergies are immune base. Eczema (and psoarasis) is considered an auto immune condition. So basically our immune system is going crazy. You use antihistamines, it just suppresses the allergic reaction but it doesn't take it away. Antihistamines are like bandaids. She is always going to have immune system reactions and the best you can do is control it. I have all three too - well not eczema but psoarasis, allergies and of course Uc.

Btw, welcome to HW and I am sorry that your little one has to go thru in life with this horrible condition.
