Hi..welcome to the forum....40 years is a long time with UC. Interesting and somewhat careless argument your doctor made supporting surgery for you unless you already have some precancerous cells from a recent biopsy?
The odds can't be stated as a guarantee we'll get colon cancer.
That's why we have c-scopes and many biopsies.
Most of us do take probiotics...I think they'd be a good idea for everyone considering how many gastro bugs we pick up..
I've never had any flares caused by antibiotics even before I took probiotics, but I do know that the probiotics can help in preventing gastro flora imbalance causing more problems.
You could consider rectal meds to help with your next flare.
It helps a lot to have support through family and friends.

~URSO for PSC (or PBC) 500mg X 2 daily (LFTs back to NORMAL!!)
My doc's logic.. "TREAT (FROM)BOTH ENDS" worth it !!!
