I am almost 65 and have had UC for over 40 years.  I have spoken with doctors that told me to have my colon removed because the odds were that I would have colon cancer.  One even showed me a chart showing the probability of colon cancer with each succeeding year of UC.  I do get flareups and sometimes have been hospitalized with them.  During those times I allowed administration of prednizone along with my regular asacol (used to be asulfidine).  Currently I am taking asacol.
I eat almost everything I want unless I am having flareups.  Normally I eat a lot of fruit and veggies.  I love spicy food, Mexican, Chinese or BBQ.
For over 30 years I had a high-stress job which I performed well - at the same time my wife and I have had 5 kids and 2 grandchildren.
Almost all my adult life I have lived with this disease.  I am deeply religious and my wife loves and supports me when I am troubled with UC.  I am not lucky - I am blessed!
Recently I have had to take antibiotics for other problems.  Unfortunately antibiotics usually cause a flareup of UC.  My pharmacist stated that severe diarrhea is sometimes caused by the good bacteria in my digestive tract being destroyed by either medicines or diseases like UC.  He gave me a product that you took twice a day and it reinterduced bacteria into my digestive system.  It was amazing!  My diarrhea went away and even though I was on the antibiotic for a period of time - my flareup did not return.
Since then I tried this when I had UC flareups and the bacteria helped me significantly. I don't know if it will but you might want to try it.
My prayers are for you.  I know what you are going through.  Trust in God and he will give you the strength to deal with your experience.

wow thank you for sharing that!! I am so fearful of one day having cancer after only 20 years of the disease...good for you and sticking to your guns!! They wanted to take my colon out 20 years ago, too, thank god my mom wouldn't let them! A little perseverance and I believe anyone can get through it. I just started on probiotics because I am having a flare up, and upped my asacol to 12 per day...after 1 day it's getting better already! These might be the new answer...
Ulcerative colitis for 20 years

Meds:
Asacol x 9 daily
Multi Vit
Ferrous Sulfate (on occasion..)
Salmon oil capsules
Garlic Supp
Calcium
Vit D
Green Tea capsules

Last prednisone tapering regimine: September 2004

Hi..welcome to the forum....40 years is a long time with UC. Interesting and somewhat careless argument your doctor made supporting surgery for you unless you already have some precancerous cells from a recent biopsy?
The odds can't be stated as a guarantee we'll get colon cancer.
That's why we have c-scopes and many biopsies.

Most of us do take probiotics...I think they'd be a good idea for everyone considering how many gastro bugs we pick up..

I've never had any flares caused by antibiotics even before I took probiotics, but I do know that the probiotics can help in preventing gastro flora imbalance causing more problems.

You could consider rectal meds to help with your next flare.

It helps a lot to have support through family and friends.

Hi and welcome to Healingwell :) I applaud your pharmacists recommendation. Not that many pharms (nor docs) will suggest a probiotic. Many of us here on already on them but I too am curious as to what you are taking.

40 years is a long time! Thanks for coming in here and telling us your story.
