Lately whenever I feel painful cramps and have to go to the washroom I've had to throw up (well actually it's only happened twice so far). This is something that I never had before. Does anyone know why I am experiencing this? Is this normal for colitis?

Hi...it would seem some have throwing up as symptoms. If you're having rectal pain and gut cramping when having bms, it's possible you've got rectal inflammation..

I've never thrown up unless I was obviously sick and it continued for a period of time, but have been nauseated many times where I've felt I wanted to throw up.

It's possible you are flaring, have reflux or both.....or....you've picked up a gastro bug.

How are you between the times you're having those symptoms?

When was your last check-in with the GI and did you have a series of blood tests done?

With my last severe flare, i was throwing up because i was nauseous. I got severely dehyrated. If your throwing up continues please call your doctor. I was in the hospital for 4 days because of it. Hope you feel better soon.

I often become nauseous while having a bm, but I do notice it is worse when I have an empty stomach or am hungry. Are you eating well?

I was recently prescribed something to help with the abdominal cramping that went with the nausea. It is called levsin.

I almost never throw up even with really bad nausea so I really feel bad for you. I hope you get to the bottom of this soon.

My first 2 flares were most definately my worst and both times I would often be sick whilst having a BM and I think it was all to do with the pain being so severe it actually made me sick.  Thankfully the flares since have not been so bad.

Occasionally when I'm flaring, I do get nausea and vomiting but most of the time it's just nausea from the pain of the cramping or something I ate. I think maybe, too, that some people throw up easier than others... Like a weaker gag reflex. So while most of us feel nauseous, some of us never have vomiting. I have weird reasoning for things though so that's probably pretty far off base, hahah.

In a flare I always have it comin out of both ends and usually at the same time as well. As ediekristen suggested i have a very weak gag reflex. I also tend to vomit if I laugh to hard. Or cough a lot. It was a lot worse when I was a teen but it still happens.

I've never actually vomited b/c of UC, but I definitely do get nauseous sometimes during flares.

when I was in my flare from hell, I would feel like hurling while having bm, I am surprised I did not.

I agree w/EdieKristen's theory.

I have had pretty bad nausea with this flare. My doc doesn't act as though it's out of the ordinary but it is for me. I have had to take Phenergen a few times b/c it was so bad. It doesn't come with an empty stomach or anything obvious. Some days I wake up with it and it's off and on all day. Blech!

I'm totally with kb5 - I seem to throw up more easily then most people. Most noticably when I cough too much.

The nausea is worst when I have a BM on the move and I can feel it moving around my colon. Once its out, I start to feel much better.

I have found a hot shower, if gotten to in time can alleviate the nausea enough that I don't throw up my dinner.

I've got a weak gag reflex too, but it didn't start until I got UC. When I am severely sick (usually due to dairy) I get nauseated too. I've never actually thrown up but I always feel like my whole body is just going collapse. Onces its over though I feel a million times better.

I would agree with the gag reflex theory.

Only once was I soooooo nauseated after a family get-together during a very hot day, I actually had to force myself to throw up. I can't remember if I was flaring or not, but what I did find out was that hot dog can sit in the stomach for 7 hours and I don't chew as well as I should. *ugh*!
