Does anyone have trouble with beans causing gas and cramping when you are flaring?

i just recently had split pea soup that killed me the next day. and i'm not even flaring.
but it also gave my healthy husband some terrible gas so we suspect the peas may have been too old or something.

either way, during a flare i try to avoid beans and high fiber stuff like uncooked veggies. they are just harder to digest.

UC (probably pancolitis, but no c-scope yet), diagnosed June 2006, started having major symptoms sometime in January 2006, about 3 months after childbirth. 2nd flare (minor) may 2007 after taking caprylic acid for 2 weeks.

-Prednisone 8/28/06-2/28/07. and again may '07, 8 week course.
-Prayer! asacol, probio, ground psyllium husk, prenatal, folic acid, cal-mag

may you live all the days of your life.

I love it, but it doesn't love me, for as long as I can remember.

Beans, split peas are all in the legume family. One of their less lovable traits is that, because they're so high in fiber, they cause more gas, and can be painful to us when we're in a flare. I just finally started eating them again after my first year in remission. I love them, but they just hurt me too much.

Beano before you eat will help with the gas, but I still suggest staying away from this group of foods when in a flare.

They'll give most people gas and probably discomfort.

Choose to eat it for supper and not lunch.

Split pea soup....yummmm, but I don't have legumes in bulk too often because of the specific and painful type of discomfort.

Do take the suggestion to use a digestive enzyme.

It won't hurt your UC, but if you have a lot of rectal gas, it might exacerbate a hemorrhoid.

Are you on any meds at this time?

What do you normally eat in a day?

Where in the colon is your UC...throughout or limited?

Seems it would be in order....you have to eat or become malnourished. Let us know the outcome.

You must eat!
No refine food, NO SUGAR,
Good food : brown rice, cooked chicken, spinach (I read it here ! very good) potatoes, whole wheat bread, pears, bananas, oatmeal.
Advantage Digestive for UC (in any drug store)
Good luck
