Hi. I've been a lurker for some time and thought I'd register. I have found a lot of great info here.

I was originally diagnosed with UP about 3 years ago but had very mild symptoms. My Dr and I decided to not use any drugs and monitor it. I had my 2nd colonoscopy in Jan 08 after my symptoms escalated. He dx me with indeterminate UC. I went on Lialda (4 per day) and mesalamine enema nightly. My symptoms cleared up in a few days and I felt great. Things were going fine for about 3 months when my symptoms returned while on the medication.

I met with the Dr and he said that sometimes the Lialda will just stop working. He gave me a Rx for Colazal (3 - 3x/day) and a cortisone foam. I decided to top taking everything for a few weeks to see if I could control it with diet. Once I stopped the Lialda, my cramps and multiple bms improved. I also stopped drinking anything with carbonation and stuck mostly with water and iced tea.

Anyway, it's been a few weeks and while my symptoms improved, I was gettiing a lot of cramps and bms late in the day. I have restarted the Lialda yesterday but only 1 per day. I'm going to see if it works. So far so good. I even had a can of Coke today and didn't have any bad effects.

I'll be checking in here often and hope everyone gets into remission soon.

Try not to fool around with your meds .... I do understand you wanting to control your symptoms through diet, but you're putting yourself in a compromising situation by not using meds. Food may improve some of your "food" symptoms...consider that an inflamed gut isn't tolerant of anything in there. Food doesn't cause flares, nor heal it.

Considering your UC is progressing.....your doc didn't make a good decision to not treat you initially.

Welcome to the forum. Hope the forum will be beneficial to you.
*Heather*Status: mini flare Dec 28... tapered to every 4th night
~diagnosed January 1989 UC (proctosigmoiditis)
~5ASA: Asacol (6 daily) + Salofalk enemas (increase for flares tapered to maintenance)
~Bentylol (dicyclomine) 20mg as needed
~Probiotic 3(Natural Factors Protec) bedtime + 1 (Primadophilus Reuteri) occasionally
~multi-digestive enzymes as needed ....zymactive 3 - 5x daily
~Ranitidine,Pariet (reflux) Effexor XR 75mg;  Pulmicort/Airomir (asthma)
~URSO for PSC (or PBC) 500mg X 2 daily (LFTs back to NORMAL!!)
My doc's logic.. "TREAT (FROM)BOTH ENDS"  worth it !!!
