HI Guys, I have a quick question relating to back pain…

I have had UC for many years and diagnosed with pan-colitis in 2007. For the past few months I have been suffering from a crippling back pain. I have always suffered from pain in my shoulders (prob from sitting in front of the PC every day), but for the past while, nearly every morning between 3 – 6 am I wake up with burning kind of pain between my two shoulder blades. I find it very difficult to get comfortable and sometimes it even hurts to breath.

Anyone has similar or can it be just the mattress I have?

Thanks J

Pan- Colitis diagnosed May 2007

3 * 800mg Asacol

I personally have had severe back pain in my mid back since i was 20, 5 years before UC. I think mine is due to inflamation b/c it gets worse when my UC flares get worse. I can feel it when I twist or breath deeply. Vioxx helped when i took it and Prednisone helps, but I bare with it and try to keep my UC in control. I slept on my brothers bed once and he has a nice matress and it did help but I can't affort another mattress at the  time.

Yeah, I get the same thing since being diagnosed with pancolitis approx. 5 years ago.  It is usually under and between my shoulder blades.  Sometimes my whole rib cage and back feel tight and sore, especially hurts when I need to sneeze and it expands.

I also have some sort of muscle contractions that make my abs constrict like they would while doing a sit-up, but involuantary.  This seems to happen at the same times when my back is hurting, and is worse when in bed.  Anyone else have similar problems?

Bam, thanks ! Your description matches my symptoms spot on ! Today it has been so bad I can barely sit tight at work because of the pain.
Have you mentioned this to your consultant or doctor, as I don't think it's normal to feel this way? I just find it so hard sometimes to accept the pain, even though I've had UC for many years.... Especially when my hubby complains that he's not feeling well when he has a cold! I feel sometimes like saying to him, try sitting in the loo for hours on end with only blood and mucus coming out !
Sorry about the whinge, I think it's just getting to me today mad

Yea I have tightness and pain in my back to the point I can't even sneeze and if I do then it hurts. A doc back when I was in college saw me for 5 minutes and said I have arthritis. So I figure theres not much I can do about it.
Jepa, Whenever I play basketball I always hear these younger guys complaining about being tired and hurting or what not and I just think to myself what weenies. lol. I have had D for weeks and losing blood and bad back pain and I don't ever complain.

Glad I'm not the only one with the back pain. Last night my lower back hurt so bad it was difficult to get to sleep. Then other times it's in the upper back between shoulder blades like you said. My doc said the Prednisone should help. I'm tapering off so I guess I'll have to figure something else out.

I think we make a lot of people look like weenies. :)
