For a good while now I have been symptom free of problems with any gas type distress, or other symptoms of uc, reflux, etc, now all of a sudden over the past two weeks it is back, symptoms of a good deal of tightness in my upper gut, belching it out, no heartburn present. Bowel movements are normal. And of course, along with that comes the worry of something being seriously wrong when I know it is just one of the flares I've had in the past. I have been using the digestive enzymes again throughout this. Sometimes I just feel so bloated. And when my shorts I wear push into my upper part of my gut like they do it forces everything upward causing more discomfort. So then I am forced to leave the pants unbuttoned when sitting down. And they really are not tight around that area. And I hate the what appears to be stinging sensations. And it seems like when I do go to the bathroom I can feel it moving through the upper part of my colon. Wondering if this is because I am looking for things and paying more attention to things. I've noticed I cannot eat anything that is breaded also without it appearing to sit heavy in my chest, which could be a reflux problem, the same thing with eating a hot dog another time and another time a steak. Are these symptoms worse as I'm constantly thinking about them? It definitely is gas, a lot of my problem. This drives me crazy. eyes

When I went on Asacol and Lialda I experienced major gas.  I would ask your dr. if it's the Asacol.  When I stopped the Lialda my gas subsided quite a bit.

I have been on the Asacol one time before but don't remember the problem with it then. And then there is the discomfort behind the breastbone. I have to use a gas-x every night before bedtime as I go to bed with it and wake up with it. If I mention belching to him they want to do a endoscope. I have no problems that bad with that.

Hi...maybe the GasX isn't what you need. Ar eyou still on the Protonix? Maybe you need a change regarding that type of med.

I would have the upper scope done regardless if I were you....

You could increase the Canasa to twice daily or consider to use retention enemas.....sometimes low simmering flaring can cause upper gastro symptoms.

I hope you get some relief....

Are you taking probiotics to reestablish good gut ecology and to improve digestion? What's your diet like? A diet high in sugars and starches can cause alot of gas and bloating, if you're out of balance. Food sensitivities can also cause bloating, gas and water retention. Gluten and dairy are primary offenders.

Hey Quincy, I am still on the protonix once daily. I have a followup appointment the end of next month with my gastro doctor. It doesn't help that my weight is about 25 pounds more than I need it to be. I notice the biggest issue with the gas pressure when sitting. It's like the gas is forced upward into my diaphragm area. When I am standing it is not much of an issue or when I'm laying down it is not bothersome. I've dealt with this two or three times before.

Hey princesa, I am not back on my probiotics but will start back on them tonight. I eat a serving of Dannon Activia yogurt every day which after two weeks is supposed to balance your digestive system. My main problem is with sitting. I am trying to sit upright more.

If you have problems digesting dairy, as many IBDers do, you might be better off getting your probiotics in pill or powder form.

I support to nix the yogurt as well! When I tried it, the gut cramps were the worst. I actually get worst cramping with yogurt than other milk products...go figure.

Regarding probiotics, take them at night on an empty stomach rather than during the day...at least for now.

35 years a go I had a bowel problem, and was taking azulfidine, valium to calm me down etc., etc. One day I sat down and read the side effects of the drugs I was taking, I called my doc and told him I was still feeling bad, and most of my problems were listed on the side effects of these drugs. My doc told me to stop taking the medications and see what happens. Guess, what, within a few weeks I was feeling a lot better, in fact cured! I wonder how a body can heal itself when it has to sort out all the various medications and suppliments that are put into it each day? I am now suffering from external beam radiation induced pain in my rectum due to prostate cancer treatment. I'm taking Canasa 1000MG suppositories at bedtime, without success. If anyone on this thread knows of anyone in my situation who put up with radiation induced rectum pain and did nothing, or almost nothing, and waited it out, how long was it before the body healed itself and recovered? It has been almost six weeks since I stopped radiation.

At wit's end, I recently switched from Asacol to sulfasalazine, and almost all of the bloating and very painful gas I thought was coming from uc has gone away.  Apparently, it was the Asacol.  (For years!)

I had alot of gas while on the Asacol. Once I went onto the Sulfasalazine, it just about stopped.

Now I am not feeling so good this morning. The pressure in my upper gut is the worst ever. It seems like I cannot get rid of it. And I know it is gas as I heard it very clearly through the stethoscope. This has come up since last night late. And my chest hurt pretty bad this morning. It has ceased but the gas pain and pressure is not going away. And my stressing over it I know has made it worse. And I feel so drained this morning.

I'd suggest calling your GI and asking them to move up your appointment, if you are that uncomfortable you should see them sooner in my opinion.

I just happened to think about something. I have been eating a few cashews and almonds the past couple of nights, and I know they cause me issues at times. Wasn't very smart. I need to put the jars of them out of my site. Now I am thinking they are the culprit. But this is like a slight stomachache. I hope it eases up. I wonder if I halted my asacol 400mg for a few days to see if the gas ceased if that would hurt me. I was not on any meds for 4 years anyway. If it disappeared then I would know that was partly the culprit.
