Having read so many posts here about probiotics, I contacted my GI and he recommended this brand. Anyone have any experience with it? Are there any downsides or side effects from probiotics. I'm doing fairly well right now so I don't want to push it but I'd love to be doing extremely well if these will help.

All comments welcome.

Hi! I took Florastor about about 6 months. My GI recommended it. The only reason I switched was b/c my pharmacy had to special order it and it was pretty $$. No side effects from it.

It's a well known and well reputed probiotic....worth a try....if not, you can try others. Not all agree with everyone for different reasons.

Keep us posted as to how you do on it.

I started Florastor a couple weeks ago and haven't noticed much difference. I think I'll just stick with it until I run out and then decide whether or not to continue w/ it.

My former GI uses it himself and loves it.  They sell in on the shelf in Duane Reade in NYC or you can order it off the web.

I've used VSL#3 to manage my colitis for a few years now and it works great. You can look it up online. I'ts specifically designed for the management of uc. Its a little pricey, but it works great for me. I hope this helps.

Also really good if you have to take antibiotics because it won't die off like the bacteria (it is a probiotic yeast) and has shown very affective to this form of D along with other forms of D. There was a pilot study done with this particular strain and UC and the results, though not controlled, showed some 2/3 getting much better, if not remission, within a month or two (about 3/dy). Promising? Yes. Certainty? Not quite without the proper controls. At some point I want to start this one again with Culturelle. I took a very large variety of probiotics when I was in a flare, so I can't say which ones definitively helped, but I'm pretty sure just taking them has helped (it was the only thing I was consistent with when I simultaneously saw improvement).

I use VSL3 but it only works if I take 3x the recommended dose. You should be able to get it on prescription if your lucky...

Florastor is available in most retail chain pharmacies, and at independent pharmacies. to find out where to purchase Florastor in your area. It is commonly found in the anti-diarrheal/stomach aid section, and can also be obtained by asking the pharmacist (many stores keep Florastor the product behind the counter). It can also be purchased online at

I am on Florastor. I bought mine for way less at vs the local pharmacy (plus the pharmacy doesn't stock it regularly anyway). It seems to be helping but it could also be that I have finally hit the therapeutic levels of Remicade and Imuran.

I tried Florastor soon after getting diagnosed. Their sales reps do an aggressive job of giving out loads of samples to GI specialists, and that's where I got my samples from. It didn't help much, but I also was in a severe flare so maybe needed something stronger...or should have tried it for longer 3 weeks.
