Hello!
I am (yay!!!) going to Australia this summer with 2 of my siblings. I am a little nervous because I will be ending my pred taper while I am there and dont know yet if the 6 mp will hold me in remission or not. Nut im keeping my fingers crossed that it will and thinking positively!
I have noticed that there are a couple members on here from Australia and I guess I just had some general questions. Thanks for looking!
Are stores/restaurants pretty open about letting people use their restrooms?
Is it pretty easy to find uc friendly-foods in restaurants? (I know everyone's "friendly" foods are different but for me its fresh fish either sushi or cooked, well-steamed vegetables, things like that)
um, is there any advice you'd offer to a traveler in your country with uc? I will mostly be in Surfer's Paradise (between gold coast and brisbane) because that is where i have family.
Thank you again so much for looking and for and advice!

Hey Winni; I'm not from Australia, but visited the very same area you will be about 15 years ago. I remember that the fresh fish is awesome over there and I pretty much lived on fresh fish and fruit! The other thing I remember...and I think about it everytime I have to use a restroom, is in most places I went to visit, their stalls were fully enclosed so it was like a little closet and had great privacy. I always wonder why we've never done that here in the states, it was such a nice thing and pure heaven for UCers! Anyway, I'm sure one of the folks who lives there will actually give you much better details, but just wanted to let you know my experience. Hey, have a good trip and have fun! Loved it there!

As a rule, all restaurants and shopping centres have public rest rooms that are open and free to use. It really depends where you are, but its rare in the extreme to be denied access to their rest room.

As for food, Australia has plenty of Sushi and Seafood restaurants, especially on the coast.

The only other advice I would have for you, is pretty much do as you would do at home. Eat well and take a "change" kit with you when you go out.

I hope you like it here :-)

hi!

im from california, but i have lived on the gold coast for 3 years and am quite close to surfers paradise actually.

i know where every bathroom is on the coast and there are lots.  even toilets in public places like parks and the beach. pretty much everywhere.   i have not had a problem anywhere going to the toilet.  and there are nice comfy benches near the toilets for those with a partner or friends that need to sit and wait for you.  as my husband knows well.

i've even had the pleasure >_<  of using a toilet at a hotel or restaurant or 10 (heehee) without having to eat there or be a customer.

aussies are very laid back and these things are okay and nobody bats an eye.

sushi is not nearly as good as california as the only raw fish they serve is salmon and tuna.  you will find a lot of so-called sushi being canned tuna salad or terriyaki chicken. i know, dont ask me.  but they have lots of fish n chips shops that grill fresh fish.  menus are quite diverse and you shouldnt have any issues with food.

have fun! its awesome over here. i love it!

and if you need to see a doctor, you dont need insurance and its only $35-$60 for a visit, and prescriptions are not bad either. seeing a specialist is a bit more spendy, but most doctors know what UC is and can prescribe for it if needed.

so you should be A-OK!

I think that's great. I HATE how they commonly deny access to "public" restrooms here. Practically every store and restaurant, unless it's a large department store, has a sign that says "Bathroom for CUSTOMER use only" which is just terrible. One day I was walking around downtown in this shopping area with my sister and I Really had to go and couldn't find a SINGLE place with a bathroom or one I could use; even the pharmacy, CVS, had their bathroom locked and you had to be a pharmacy customer to use it!!!!! At that point I was so upset and sick that I just bought a soda and made them give me the key. I should have done it sooner, but it's terrible that you basically have to pay to use the restroom.
