Chris goes back on Prednisone today. it makes him really aggressive to say the least, but hey if it works, right? last time he spent most of the first few days repeatedly running into the wall and spinning around. also the Dr. put him on Flagyl (antibiotic) "in case he has a bacterial infection" (his words). is this common? i thought you weren't supposed to take antibiotics unless there was a definite infection, to keep from building a resistance to them... i guess we'll be good and do what we're told, but i don't like the idea of medicating a problem that may not actually be present. confused

My GI prescribes Flagyl to treat colonic inflammation as do others.  It's not necessarily for the possibility of an infection, which is probably not a great reason to take an antibiotic.

I think it's also common to throw it at someone who is flaring after antibiotic treatment in case there's a c. diff. infection.  If that's the reason, better to have a stool sample test than carry a rabbit's foot.

Only some people resond favorably to Flagyl for colitis treatment.  In some cases -- like mine -- it exacerbates a flare.

I am sorry to hear that your son is so sick at such a young age.  As far as antibiotics go, I know what you mean.  Maybe you could question the doctor further and discuss your concerns.  When my daughter was that age, she had severe bladder broblems and was on antibiotics for 18 months.  Throughout her life was on them for this or that, I didn't know better then.  Sometimes you have no choice, like the bladder thing.  Other times, well, you do have a choice.  Now my daughter has developed allergies to most antibiotics and can only take a couple.  She is only 18 years old.  You are right to question it, but then again, it may make sense.  See what everyone else thinks.  Take care and good luck, Bellski

oh, i am also allergic to some antibiotics i think as a result of over use as a child.

I got sick of feeling like a guinea pig and started doing more reading. At this point I question everything my doctor tells me.

If you're not comfortable giving him an antibiotic "just in case" I would suggest you ask your doctor to give you a specific reason for taking the drug and a specific set of benefits to look for. Personally, I would not take an antibiotic "just in case."

UCMommy - I often feel like a guinea pig due to the nature of UC. Some things work for some people, but not all things work for all people.

We seem to spend many years/most of our lives learning what does and doesn't work for us.

The hardest part for the doctors with regard to your son is he is far too young to start putting the pieces together for himself. He doesn't yet have the ability to see the cause and effect of the medications, and worse yet, can't communicate how well something is working for him to the doctor.

Due to his age, they are most likely just being extremely cautious as a c.diff infection could be disastrous in one so young.

Though as a parent, if something doesn't feel right, get another opinion. Never trust a doctor if your gut instinct says otherwise.
