Hello,

My flareup started in month of April and docter kept me on prednisone starting with 40mg coming down 5mg every 3 days. after few days he asked me to do a colonoscopy and asked me to stay on 20mg for 10days and start coming down to 5mg. When i was on 15mg i started noticing some changes and he asked me to stay back on 20mg for one week..Then now i tapered down to 5mg and i'm on 6th day of 10days on 5mg of pred..Today i noticed a change in my bowel movement and small amount of blood..
What to do now.?.Do i need to call the docter or see for some for some more days..?Is it common while we are tapering pred..?Parallerly I'm taking 4 Lialda every day..
Is it OK to stay on pred at these low dosages for few more days?
I'm very much scared and in confusion....

Please Please !! some body respond to my questions...

Thanks in advanvce..

Definitely call your doc.

Have you had problems coming off of pred in the past?

I understand being scared and the confusion. This disease just puts our emotions through the wringer.

Have you tried any rectal meds? Canasa? Rowasa? or steroid enemas? It may take the addition of rectal meds to get you off of the pred.

Good luck! Let us know what you find out.

Hi Dakotagirl,

This is the first time on prednisone..
Doctor told my UC is left-sided and no need to use Canasa suppository.
Not sure if i call a doctor what he wants me to do....
Is it OK to stay back on 10mg if doctor advises me to do?
I'm loosing lot of hair now a days, not sure it is because of Pred or lialda..
One more thing I'm noticing is very small white color sores on my face and on my head...They are coming and going away...Are these the side effects of Pred?

Please advise me what would be the best thing to do in my current situation

Thanks in advance

I forgot to mention in my previous message.. These white color sores are like small blisters (looking like cold sores)...

It looks to me like you have been tapered off the pred WAY too quickly.  From my vast experience of pred, if you start to come down off it while still having symptoms you are virtually guaranteed to flare up again.

I would speak to your GI and suggest staying on 20mg until you have no more blood. Also I think 5mg drops are way too big.  I think you should taper by 2.5mg a week until you get to 15mg and then go even slower. (I come down by 1mg).

It is not easy coming off pred but doing it too fast it a recipe for disaster.

Take care
