At the request of my wife's gyno, I had a semen analysis done. I'm on 200 mg Azathioprine and have been off Prednisone about a month after having been on it about a year. Count was OK, but morphology was a bit low. White blood cell count was a bit high. Gyno prescribed a round of Bactrim, which I am hesitant to take. She thought there might be a mild infection of the prostate.

I don't know much about this stuff (fertility) and we aren't actively pursuing pregnancy. Just thought it would be a good idea to get this checked out. My gastro. said go ahead with the conception thing, as I was worried about the azathioprine. I've called him for his opinion about taking the antibiotic. Haven't heard from him yet.

I guess I'm wondering a couple of things. First, I know the topic of male fertility and Imuran has come up before, but anyone have any thoughts regarding my case specifically. Secondly, anyone have any experience with Bactrim. Thanks!

I've taken it before a few times and didn't have any problems in terms of my UC but everyone is different. I would take it though, if you have an infection you don't want to let that go unchecked!
Female, 22, Ulcerative colitis (pancolitis) since 1999; GERD; gastritis; osteopenia in hip & lumbar region of the spine from long term prednisone use.

Current Meds:
10mg Lexapro (for depression/social anxiety)

125mg Azathioprine
4800mg Asacol (Four 400mg tablets, three times a day)

Hi Cycling.  This is my first post here. Sorry for the delay I hope that your are still checking this thread. Anyways, I live in Japan, suffer from UC and take both Bactrim and Imuran.
Regarding Imuran, my wife and I also had the same worries. I've talked to many doctors about this and the long and short of it is that Imuran seems to be of  low risk to males with regards to fertility.
Don't know about Bactrim or antibiotics affecting fertility. My doctor recommended I take Bactrim twice a week and this is simply because I'm in the process of switching from one immunosuppressent to another. Since my level of immunosuppresents is quite high the antibiotics are just to stop potential infections. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply. I'm still not sure if I'm going to take the Bactrim or not. It is a 2-week course. I'm thinking I will take it, hearing from both my GI doc and family doc that it should be OK.
