Hi All,

Well, I have been on 40 mgs of Pred for a week now, and I was starting to notice an improvement.  I had been working really hard, and doing a pretty good job, on eating right, blah, blah, blah.

Well, last night we rented movies and I ate M&M's and drank a Diet Coke.  Yep - chocolate, caffeine, and aspartame.  How stupid am ?!  This morning, I definitely had more mucous than the past few mornings.

Dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb.

On the flip side, I haven't felt that crampy feeling on my left side in about four days.

Have a great weekend y'all!

The diet coke isn't a good thing....but I don't get why you're punishing yourself so extremely....food won't make your flare worse. It can give you more discomfort and probably exacerbate diarrhea, however, so base it on that fact, not that your UC will be worse.
Once it's all out, you should be feeling back on track.

It's better to make the choices consciously and know the outcome rather than do it impulsively and then punish yourself afterward....can get into a negative cycle which isn't good for dealing with UC.

Hope you feel better soon,

quincy

Thanks for the advice, Quincy.  I really appreciate it!

I've kind of always had the problem of punishing myself for decisions made, whether they be impulsive or well thoughtout.  They can be small decisions like food choices or large ones like job changes.  Really trying to work on that, though! :-)

Thanks Again!

I'm eating peach ice cream with chocolate syrup as I read your post. Sometimes you just have to cave in. You'll bounce back, don't worry!

checkerjane91 - You will probably find a pattern in not the type of softdrink/soda you drink, but the fact its a carbonated drink. If you hunt back through the healing well UC posts, there have been a few discussions on "worst foods" for us; and carbonated drinks come in generally at number 1 or 2, closely tied with sugar.

Sugar feeds the bad bacteria in our colons. The more sugar, the better the environment for the wrong kind of bacteria and the more D and gas you get.

Just don't kick yourself too hard hey, it takes a long time to learn what will set your symptoms off. Consider it a learning experience, and next time you watch a movie, try removing just one of the things you ate and see what happens. You will slowly work out what does and doesn't work for your individual UC.

Best of luck on your recovery!
