I had been procrastinating on trying a probiotic for fear of messing up what I have considered a nice, relatively quiet (3-4x/day, formed) remission.  I decided to finally try one last week because I am traveling to England and Ireland next week on my honeymoon.  I figured I'd try Culturelle first because it doesn't have to be refrigerated.

I noticed that within 3 days my bm's have gone from a kinda funky smell to a "normal" smell.  Within 5 days I was down to 1-2 bm's a day.  And as I write this for the first time in YEARS (except for right after my abscess surgery) it is almost 4 in the afternoon and I have not had a BM yet today (I usually have to go right away after waking up).

I was just wondering if this is psychosomatic and all in my head or if others have had a quick, positive effect after starting a probiotic (Culturelle or any other kind).

Hi Ganggreen,

I'll let you know. I just started taking it yesterday and I've gone 4 times today but with NO blood. My bleeding has been getting progressively better for the last couple of days, so I don't know if I can attribute it to the Culturelle, but it certainly hasn't hurt anything. Another reason for the number of BM's might be the fact that I've been eating a lot. I finally got my appetite back, so there is a lot that needs to be digested. Back in the good old days, it was normal for me to go multiple times per day after eating heavily the day before.

Have you noticed a little extra gas since you started taking it? I have, but it's not bad enough that I would stop taking it. I heard that this dissipates when your body gets used to the new bacteria. It's just annoying!! LOL As is everything with this darn disease!!! LOL

Well good luck to you and congratulations on your upcoming marriage and honeymoon!!! I hope you have a wonderful time!!!

Thanks Lisa.  I noticed a lot of gas the first day.  By the second day that subsided almost completely.  After a week or so I have less gas than before I started, and it smells more like it "should" and less like raw sewage LOL.

I took it for a while and did well on it and then stopped it. I recently tried to start taking it again and it made me have horrible gas and cramps. I thought It would just take a while to get used to it again. I tried it for three weeks and it didn't go away so I quit taken it.

wanted to say thank you for your post, I've been "on the fence" about trying a probiotic because I wasn't too bad off at 4-6 times a day and I wasn't pushing too hard to get the doctor to talk to me about giving them a try. Well today I called and pushed, got the "non-committal" answer from them and started my own post asking opinions on whether or not it was silly to start without talking to them first. Between the answers I got there, family feed back and your positive results I'm starting tomorrow.
