Hello all,
So i know that many people talk about sugar alternatives, but does anyone know of any salt alternatives? I am a full blown saltaholic! I put salt on EVERYTHING, even sweet stuff. Then i found out (on this fabulous forum) that salt strips your bones of calcium and as i already have osteopeonia i figure i should cut back....
salt is kinda my last remaining vice though and giving it up is not going too well.
any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I have never been a big salt person but i am an herb junky!

My husband is a salt junky too so my cooking was very different for him. He now loves it though.

I take and mix a bunch of dried herbs and use that as others would salt. Some garlic granuales, oregeno, cumin, paprika, ground fennel...so many combinations to try! Its not quite the same as salt but gives food that pop of flavor like salt does.

What about fresh parsley, dill, or basil sprinkled over food? Salt is very irritating to my colon so I try to keep my consumption of it low & rely on veggies/herbs to add flavor to main dishes. Try adding bay leaf to red meat sauces, steam fish with celery, carrot, & chard. / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC; currently on 3 Colazal daily for maintenance of remission)

Using spices for flavor is a great idea.  I would suggest using high quality sea salt when you do need salt.  It seems to have so much more flavor, therefore you need less of it.  I do the same thing with butter - I use a high quality French butter, and a little goes a long way.

Hi winni,
Another thing you may want to try is sea salt. Because the taste is so much stronger you can use a lot less. We purchased a salt grinder (like a pepper mill), and purchased sea salt crystals. You get a very salty taste without using very much, and it's natural & not processed so your body will absorb it differently than regular salt. Might be worth a shot.
My remaining vice is coffee. I've cut down to one a day, and I know I need to get rid of that too!! Good luck!

I swear by Sea Salt as well. You don't need very much and you can compliment it by using more herbs....that's what I do. If anything, while you look for a alternative, this may help 'ween' you off the deadly stuff.

winni...curious if your doc has done a blood test for sodium and potassium and zinc?? As well as a thyroid/iodine test.

I would say get them checked firstly to make sure nothing is out of whack...

Do you have chronic

I would suggest adding more flavour in other ways and try to cut back you salt intake by maybe doing a shake less a day...at least it's a start.

I am a salt freak too, I love salt. My mom just died from late stage osteoporosis so I guess I should try to cut back too. I didn't know it was bad for the bones. My mom always bought sea salt. I am going to get some today. Dill is good too. I remember a spice, was it called Mrs. Dash? Lemon pepper is good too, it has some salt in it. I've tried sea salt, it is very good. Good luck to you. Also, if you are like me, I salt before I even taste. I will try to make an effort to cut back on that. Take Care, bellski
