I am 29 years old and had a colonoscopy earlier this week where the doctor found focal patches of erythema and inflammation in my descending colon (left-side).  He diagnosed me with 'undeterminate' colitis and sent out several tissue samples for biopsy. Considering the signs of inflammation and my recent symptons (constant feeling of pressure, multiple bowel movements during the day, constant feeling of having to go), he prescribed me with the mesalamine enema for 28 days.
Now I know some of the common side effects are stomach pain, cramps, gas and bloating (which I have had all of for the first few days of taking the meds).  I follow the directions and make sure I keep everything in for the entire night but when I wake up, I pass all of the medication in white clumps in the toilet.  Is this normal? Or should I expect most of the medication to be absorbed in the colon?  Any help from some of the 'veterans' would be greatly appreciated.
I was also curious as to how long it took for the mesalamine enema to work its magic for other people.  I have seen a week or two as common, but was curious to hear other's experience.  Thanks.

This is totally normal. Eventually you will probably have bm's with white streaks in them instead of what you are experiencing now.

I usually notice an improvement within a two week period, but everybody is different. Hope you see some improvement soon. Good Luck!!!
diagnosed with uc 27 years ago.  Enojoyed 20 year remission with just minor blips here and there (approximately 16 of those years without any meds)
In a flare for 2 very long years which Asacol didn't help at all.  Finally in remission again since Jan 2008, can't believe it..............
currently on Sulfasalazine 2 tabs 3x day. Folic acid, mesalamine enema once a week. Omega 3, Probiotics, multi vitamin, calcium supplement, Biotin....

I agree, totally normal--I have been on mesalamine enemas for years as a maintainence drug, with no side affects whatsoever.  They will come out in the toilet the next morning with my bm's (white clumps or streaks).

Diagnosed with UC in 1997
Asacol 400 2 x 3 daily
Mesalamine liquid 60 ml once daily
