I'm in the same boat.  I went from 190 lbs. to 255 lbs. in a very short amount of time and very rarely do I eat anything.

I had read somewhere that the weight gain could be a bad reaction to the meds. we are taking but not sure if that is true.  I haven't seen my GI doc. in awhile to ask.

Also, I know Prednisone makes us gain a lot of weight but not sure how long the Predinsone weight lasts.  I have been told that Prednisone weight may take as long as 6-12 months to leave our system or that our weight reduces as we slowly taper off of Prednisone but that hasn't been my case at all.

Hope that helps....

It took me a long time to lose the Prednisone weight. It was nearly impossible to take off even a pound for several months, then my body finally adjusted and it started coming off. 100 calorie packs are great for eating sweets, Weight Watchers fudge bars are awesome, and Hungrygirl.com has a lot of good tips and product recommendations. I followed Weight Watchers for awhile which really helped me. There is a website, I think it's called dottisweightlosszone and it has a lot of lowfat delicious recipes on it. I know you weren't asking for weight loss recommendations but I thought I'd share since I had such a frustrating experience with Prednisone weight. Good luck - it will get better!

My cheeks gained the most weight when I took prednisone. I remember I used to be hungry all the time and never seemed to be full. I played soccer back then so I did get exercise. I'm not skinny by nature so it took me awhile to lose some weight. It took a long time after I tapered off of the medicine for my face to get back to normal.

I don't know the other meds though.

I just put on 10 pounds in two weeks. I was so bad w/my eating habits, jalapeno poppers, pizza, chips! I just lost control, seriously. I stepped on the scale today and just about fell over.

I am back to following the weight watchers diet today and hope to lose that weight. grrrr! The WW diet is basically just cutting calories, watching your fat intake. So you can modify it to your dietary needs. On the WW plan you can have a piece of pizza or anything else you want but you have to eat a specific number of points (calories/fat/fiber calculation) per day, to me it's really just calorie counting and watching your fat intake and trying to get fiber into your diet, moderation.

I know the fat sticks to me more while on pred. but at least I am not flaring
Beth, 32 ~ small flare - hoping caused by aspirin - hydrocortisone e's

When I was on pred, I remember going to my doctors office for a check-up a few months after being on it, and the nurse actually said "what have you been eating, WHOLE turkeys?" Needless to say, I WASN'T happy. I was always a chubby kid, and hated the fact that most of my friends were thiner than me, when I got sick, I lost a crap ton of weight, granted, it wasn't the healthy way, but I lost the weight that I wanted to lose. Pred is a messed up drug and I HATE being on it, I only take it as a pre-med now for Remicade, but my GI mentioned that if they can't get this flare under control, that he wants me back on it, which I said, NOPE!

I worked for McDonalds at the time when I was first put on it, and all I did was eat that crap (maybe thats the reason that I can barely stomach it now!) But Chicken Nuggets were my down fall, I'd end up eating like 20 a day (they were quick and easy, 'grab - n- go') and then I'd have a meal on top of it!

I hated the "moon shape" I got in my face, beacause that's were I saw the weight the most. I can't remember when I lost the weight again, but I am sure I was off the Pred. I was on a high doseage of it for almost 2 years, everytime they tried to tapper me off, I'd get worse again (when I was diagnoised, the doc said I was lucky to wake up with my colon!)

I can't believe the nurse asked it you've been eating whole turkeys.  I would have been mad.
My downfall while on Prednisone was Bryers vanilla ice cream.  People couldn't pry me away from that stuff.  Funny thing is, is that I never liked vanilla ice cream until Prednisone.  Now I can't look at that stuff without getting sick.

This is my first time in this chatroom and when I read what everyone was writing about UC and prednisone I knew I had to join. I was diagnosed with UC when I was 9 years old (I am now 24) and was in remission until this past Christmas when I had a major flare-up. I couldn't help but think that it could have been prevented had my new GI doctor not taken me off my maintenance medication that had been working for the last 15 years of my life. I spent the holiday in the hospital and the pain was unbelievable! I was immediately put on IV steroids and started on Asacol, once I was sent home I was put on 40 mg of prednisone and I took 9 Asacol pills a day. As soon as I tapered the prednisone I had another flare-up and was hospitalized again. So at this point I found a new GI who is much better and he has me on Asacol, Prednisone (down to 15mg!) and Imuran. At the moment my stomach pain is manageable but I am very scared to wean off the prednisone because of what happened last time. I am so sick of the weight gain as well as the bloated feeling I get every time I eat or drink. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced joint pain and what you do for it? Does it go away when you stop taking the prednisone? Lastly my skin is very thin and I have several red sores on my arms and I was told that it could be from my UC flare-up or from the prednisone. I was just interested to know if anyone else experienced these side effects and what they do for them?

avh1023 ---

I was diagnosed when I was 11. Out of curiosity, was your initial flare-up the only one you had over the past 15 years. Anyway, I remember when I was in the hospital my GI doctors and every other intern and what not would constantly ask me if I had any joint pains. Back then I had taken Flagyl and prednisone as well as my asacol. I hadn't started azathioprine yet so i'm not sure which med they were looking for symptoms with, but they my GI always said to tell him if I ever had any joint pains.
