Ok, hopefully some of you can give me some advice.  I’m having a UC flare (have been for 3 weeks).  I called my doc office today to see if I should reduce my Prednisone this Sunday from 40mg to 30mg (I taper on Sundays).  Of course I called them at 8am, and they never called me back and now their office is closed.  I’ve been taking the Pred for 2 weeks now and started taking the mesalamine enemas twice a day last Saturday. My bleeding had already stopped by Tuesday. Not going to the bathroom as often – down from like8-10 times a day to 3-5 times a day (depending on what I eat).  No more stomach pains. Mostly a lot of gas and bloating and still some pain in my left side.  And still diarrhea when I have a BM – nothing really formed at this point.

I also take Colazal, 3 pills 3xday which I’ve been taking for years as a maintenance med.

I’m wondering now if should just go ahead and reduce the Prednisone to 30mg on Sunday?  I’m soooooo mad at them for not calling me back.  I am fed up with them!  I feel like I’m on my own in designing a regimen to get over this flare. They should be paying me, not the other way around.

Thanks so much for your advice!

Nikki

Usually when my docs had me taper they would go down 5mg a week, which took forever. Sometimes they would go down 10mg. I hate when they don't call back :(
I tapered myself off prednisone once because my doctor refused to "let" me and it had been 5 months and I was still on 45mg so I just went down 10 a week and got a new doctor.

I would say since you taper on Sundays maybe wait the extra day until Monday, call again and if they don't call you back then go lower on Tuesday.

Waiting for my appointment with the new GI on July 18th. Insurance finally kicked in, hooray!

Thanks so much for the reply!

Well what do you know, my doc office actually called me back at 5:20pm on a Friday!  I am in total shock here! (sad isn't it?)  They told me to taper down to 30mg on Sunday and see how it goes. I have an appt with my GI on Thursday (who I haven't seen in forever) so hopefully I can keep tapering each week.  Yay!

Good to hear! :)
I was always surprised with my last doctor... He would call me himself (!) sometimes as late as 7pm or even on the weekends to tell me about blood test results and stuff, I couldn't believe it. Most of my other doctors never called me for anything, I'd always have to call them, or worse, make an appointment just to know test results. That always pissed me off- I didn't see the point in paying a $20 copay so I could go in and have them say "Well, your biopsy results/blood test results were completely normal, so let's just continue how things are!"
